The Charlotte Jewish News -June-July 2010 - Page 22 Mayor Foxx Joins the Celebration of New Book of Life Society Members By Phil Warshauer, Executive Director, Foundation for the Charlotte Jewish Community It was my great privilege and honor to join Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx on Sunday, April 25 as we welcomed our 15 newest members into the Book of Life Society and thanked them for cre ating their own legacies. The cele bration was hosted by the Foundation for the Charlotte Jewish Community and was attended by more than 80 invited guests, including 36 current Book of Life members. Margi Goldstein and Jill Newman served as the cel ebration’s co-chairs. “The legacy of Jewish culture will forever be preserved within the pages of the Book of Life,” said Mayor Foxx. “The stories captured in this book and the inter active display will serve as a source of inspiration for citizens throughout Charlotte to demon strate their commitment to our community through similar deeds and acts of volunteerism or through charitable donations to local causes in order to create legacies of their own. “I was touched by the stories that were shared with me in prepa ration for joining you at tonight’s event. I learned about many whose names prominently grace the buildings and landmarks through out our city. I also learned about other Jewish families whose names may not be as easily recog nizable, but whose generosity and com mitment to their faith have helped to make our community what it is today.” The Book of Life Society was estab lished to recognize those who established permanent endow ments or planned or deferred gifts to sup port any of our Charlotte Jewish institutions. No minimum amount must be given or promised; the only requirement is a financial commitment to sup port the future of our Jewish com munity. Each member is invited to include their personal story of phi lanthropy in an interactive Book of Life display, located on Main Street in Shalom Park’s main facility. Sixty-one individuals and fami lies are now Book of Life mem bers. Their total commitments cre ate a future pipeline in excess of $11.5 million that will support the future of our Jewish community. During the celebration, we thanked them for their financial commitments and for inspiring others to follow in their footsteps. Each of their Book of Life stories help us to understand who they are and paint a clear picture of how important our community and Judaism is to each one of them. If you haven’t had the opportu nity to read any of these stories I encourage you to visit the Book of Life display. We also invite you to add your own story to the Book of Life and create a legacy of your own. ^ For more information on how to add your story to the Book of Life please contact Phil Warshauer, Executive Director of the Foundation for the Charlotte Jewish Community at 704-973- 4544 or pwarshauer@charlotte- jewishfoundation. org.
