The Charlotte Jewish News - June-July 2010 - Page 26 No Vacation From Hunger.... Summer has arrived and with it comes vacation plans: kids off to camp, family outings at the beach, neighborhood cookouts. But sum mer brings no vacation from hunger for many in our communi ty. As a result, summer is a perfect time for Havurat Tikvah to cele brate and renew our involvement in the Dilworth Soup Kitchen. The soup kitchen was founded by longtime HT member Allen Saxe in conjunction with the con gregation and clergy of First Christian Church. It has grown and evolved into a partnership among multiple faith communities including Havurat Tikvah, area grocers, local restaurants, and members of the community-at- large (both volunteers and those who come for lunch). The soup kitchen’s history is documented in a video, “Served and Seated” (www.susie postrust.com/Duke09/Talia/index. html), by HT member and Duke University student Talia Saxe. In it, Allen outlines the simple phi losophy underlying his vision. “I wanted nice dishes, nice silver ware and no lines, and no trays. I wanted people to be seated and served.” This vision has made the Dilworth Soup Kitchen a place where guests enjoy a nourishing meal along with a warm welcome from volunteer wait staff, kitchen workers, and community friends. The Dilworth Soup Kitchen serves lunch on Mondays and Wednesdays, but help is also needed for various tasks through out the week. Interested in volun teering? Get more information by visiting the soup kitchen’s Facebook page at: www.face- book.com/group.php?gid=771341 94660. The summer months find HT members and friends gathering for other activities as well. Our Community Shabbat services are scheduled for June 26 and July 10. Services start at 10 AM and con clude with a vegetarian potluck lunch and social hour. We invite you to join us at the Fellowship Hall of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 2201 Springdale Ave. (at Magnolia) in the Dilworth neigh borhood of Charlotte. We’ll also commemorate Tisha B’Av with services on July 19. For information on time and location, visit our website or contact the number below. Finally, we enter the summer months offering a hearty mazel tov to Lea LaBaron on being called to the torah as a Bat Mitzvah. We wish Lea, parents Carol and Philippe, and sisters Margot and Annie many more family simchas. Havurat Tikvah is an affiliate of the Jewish Reconstructionist Federation. We provide a comfort able, family atmosphere where all Jews can feel welcome. We encourage participation in the community and in our services. Our Sunday School, with its excit ing new curriculum, and B’nai Mitzvah preparation are available for children. Feel free to visit, get to know us, and become part of our growing congregation of near ly 60 households. Adam Bernstein has been a solid figure during Temple Beth El’s transition. He has remained focused on our goals in the face of harsh financials storms. He has helped move the renovated Beth El from dreams to reality, and he has helped, and will continue to help, mold our large congregation into a warm and welcoming one with a small congregation feel. Fair, reflective, thoughtful and wise, Adam Bernstein’s gifts are many and our gratitude is great for all he has given. Please join us in thanking Adam on June 4 at a Shabbat Service in his honor. ^ TEmPLE BETH EL TBE Welcomes Andy Harkavy as Youth Director/Assistant Director of Education Andy Harkavy TBE is excited to welcome Andy starting July 1. Temple Beth El’s Annual Wildacres Retreat September 3-6 Labor Day Weekend At Temple Beth El, we like to get out of doors. Each year, we escape to the mountains, where we eat, drink, learn, pray ... and eat some more. The theme for this year’s Wildacres Retreat is: “L’dor Vador: Talkin’‘Bout My Generation.” We will explore how Judaism speaks to each generation and what we have to offer one another. There is plenty of time for relaxation, family, the traditional wine-and-cheese receptions and exploring the Blue Ridge Mountains. Non-members welcome. For more information, please contact Temple Beth El at 704-366-1948. Registration materials will be available at www.beth-el.com over the summer. ^ Andy will coordinate the activ ities of TBE’s flourishing youth department, with activities for 2nd grade through High School. He will serve as advisor to LIBERTY, our NFTY youth group, directing the Madrichim (Teaching Assistant) program, and create informal education in Religious School. TBE is excited that Andy will be joining us to build upon our already strong youth pro grams. Please welcome this Georgia Bulldog to Charlotte. ^
