Sandy says, “The Charlotte Lesbian and Gay Fund has demonstrated that it can raise and administer funds for LGBT community, but it needed seed funds in its endowment before people would make the decision to include it in their estate plans.” Lynn Kennelly was in the audience at the Fund’s Happening luncheon last year when Sandy made the announcement. She fol lowed up by including the fund in her estate plans. When she passed away in the fall from breast can cer, she left over $50,000 to the Fund’s endowment. Sandy has been instrumental in establishing the Charlotte Lesbian and Gay Fund. Long a supporter of nonprofit organizations serving the LGBT community, Sandy worked with others in the early part of the decade to explore how to build a stronger financial foot ing for LGBT organizations and initiatives. He knew from his experience with his family fund at Foundation For The Carolinas, that estate planning and bequests could create a stronger foundation for the LGBT community. Sandy understood the impor tance of such an endowment for Charlotte. He said, “Too many people have left our community for larger cities where their lives were better supported, cities like Atlanta, New York, and DC. I want Charlotte to be a city where people will stay, that will openly support all its citizens.” Sandy was the first donor to the Fund when it was established in 2006. Addressing the historic underfunding of non-profit organ izations that support the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, the Fund aspired to provide unrestricted operating support to LGBT organ izations and to encourage commu nity building with funds for spe cial projects that built bridges between the LGBT and non- LGBT communities. Since its inception, the Fund has provided over $300,000 in Operating and Community Connection Grants to local non-profit organizations. People giving $1,000 or more annually serve on its Grantmaking Committee to participate in allo cating funds to nonprofits. Building bridges at the Fund is more than just funding projects. The annual luncheon. The Happening, has had speakers including Rick Anicetti, CEO of Food Lion, and in 2010, Mayor Anthony Foxx. “I wanted to encourage the Charlotte community to contribute to the Charlotte Lesbian and Gay Fund and was fortunate to have been left funds from my parents for charity that could serve as seed for a challenge gift” said Berlin. “I believe the overall success of our community is dependent on pro moting understanding and inclu sion. The Charlotte Lesbian and Gay Fund moves us toward this goal by funding organizations and programs which support lesbian and gay individuals and their fam ilies in the Charlotte area,” he added. The Berlin family has long been an active participant in Charlotte Jewish life and we con tinue to benefit from their legacy. The Charlotte Lesbian and Gay Fund is a Collective Giving and Endowment Initiative of Foundation For The Carolinas. The Fund is administered by a vol unteer advisory board and 100% of donations go toward grants. For more information on the Fund, please contact Victoria G.
