The Charlotte Jewish News - October 2010 - Page 10 Celebrating Simchat Torah, A Sofer, and A Shabbaton Simchat Torah is a time for joy. This year, Havurat Tikvah’s joy is tripled: we’ll celebrate the holi day, commemorate the fourth year that our Torah has been with us for the festival, and welcome the return of Rabbi Kevin Hale for a Simchat Torah Shabbaton. Rabbi Hale, a graduate of Yale and the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College, is one of a few non-orthodox rabbis (and the only Reconstructionist rabbi) who is also a traditionally-trained sofer stam (Torah scribe). Four years ago he completed his restoration of the Torah now used by the Havurah. A former Berkeley street artist. Rabbi Hale is a dynamic speaker who is passionate about his work and about involving communities in the 613th com mandment that calls upon every Jewish person to engage, at least once, in the writing of a torah scroll. Our Shabbaton begins on Friday evening (October 1) with a festive holiday meal. Although the Havurah is known for its wonder ful pot-luck offerings, for this occasion we’ll be honoring the holiday and the community with a special catered kosher Shabbat dinner. Dinner will be followed by a joyous celebration to mark the completion, and restart, of the annual Torah cycle. They’ll be singing and music - courtesy of Havurah members Helen Lipman FOOT DISCOMFORT? Find expertise, answers & comfort at Foot Solutions. As always, Shabbat serv ices will be followed by a pot luck lunch and the opportunity to relax with Havurah members and guests. Our Shabbaton concludes on Sunday moming, October 3. Rabbi Hale has planned a special program for our Religious School children and their families.
