The Charlotte Jewish News - October 2010 - Page 7 S YNA GOGUE^fiONGREGATIONS TIRS Begins a New Year Walking into the Sam Lemer Cultural Center on Sunday morn ing, September 12 was quite an experience. There were parents and students milling about schmoozing and having bagels and coffee. Others were there signing up for Temple Israel Youth groups. Teachers were greeting students and parents. Teachers and madrichim, dressed as Toy Story (oy!) characters gave advice to “Andy” as he began another year at TIRS. It was a very busy scene and all part of Temple Israel Religious School’s Orientation and first day of classes. One of our goals this year is to create and further ties with mem bers of our Temple Israel family. Our first step in this process was to partner with the Temple Israel Men’s Club for breakfast before our Orientation program. Men’s Club President, Michael Eisner spoke with parents about the importance of being partners with the Religious School and outlined some of the ways in which Men’s Club will coordinate programs with TIRS. Men’s Club is sponsor ing an ice cream contest for the class with the highest percentage of membership in Men’s Club, Sisterhood, and TIRS PTO. In fact, Michael Eisner also encour aged children to go home and “nudgie” their parents until they join. TI Sisterhood has created “Team Yeladim,” a group of vol unteers who will coordinate pro grams with our school. During their first program with us, we cre ated sukkah decorations. Every student had the opportunity to help decorate our Temple Israel Sukkah. They also sponsored a “Hands Across the Sukkah” dinner for those who came to hang the decorations in time for Sukkot. Our TIRS families are setting the tone for a year full of reward- 7 Morah Devorah Lightyear welcomes the TIRS students to another year. ing involvement in our Religious School and in our Temple commu nity. It looks like 5771 will be an awesome year. When our bodies are denied food, we are unable to concentrate on the teachings of Torah; but, if only our bodies are fed, our souls become malnourished. We need both to grow as Jews. Come study with us and togeth er we will feed our bodies and our souls with a nosh, with study and with community. Raising your level of Jewish literacy has never been so easy!
