Outdoor Classroom Join our community to com memorate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a col laborative effort for positive change in Charlotte with our Outdoor Classroom. In conjunction with AmeriCorps, Temple Israel, Friendship Missionary Baptist Church and Covenant Presbyterian Church, we are planting the seeds of an engaging and nourishing Outdoor Classroom at Turning Point Academy. Our vision is a natural, restorative oasis amidst the asphalt jungle of the city’s urban core. The Outdoor Classroom will be a safe place where students can immerse their senses in natural surround ings. Why: Turning Points Academy, part of the CMS School System, was established to provide an alternative education for children who were not able to succeed in a traditional classroom environ ment. The school provides alterna tive types of curriculum in order to re-engage the student and create that “turning point” that will allow them to matriculate back into a traditional classroom after 180 days. We wish to provide an alterna tive natural environment that will activate all senses of each student. Once in a natural environment. students are immersed in some thing bigger than themselves, rather than focusing narrowly on one thing, such as a computer screen. They are seeing, hearing, touching, even tasting. Out in nature, a student’s brain has the chance to explore, dream, and dis cover This project presents a unique opportunity to rally numer ous neighborhood groups and individuals towards development of a shared space for student growth. All sponsors will be heav ily publicized to press sources and included on all marketing materi als. Who: We need support from individuals, companies, and com munity organizations to help make the Outdoor Classroom for Turning Point a reality. Where: The project site is locat ed on site at Turning Point Academy, 2300 West Sugar Creek Road, Charlotte, NC. When: Beginning Martin Luther King’s Day, Monday, January 17, 2011, the project site will evolve from an open green space to a verdant outdoor class room and learning playground, designed for biodiversity and eco logical health. Time: TBA Flow. Individuals, companies, and community organizations can make monetary donations, and donations of new or recycled materials to help build the Outdoor Classroom. Monetary donations that are made will help purchase materials. There are also diverse volunteer opportunities which include landscaping, design, creative materials reuse, visual art, gardening, nature edu cation and small-scale construc tion. The Jewish community in Lake Norman rallied to the cause of jus tice by organizing a wine dinner. Over the course of two evenings, dozens of community members and their family and friends gath ered to enjoy fine food and wine at Dressler’s Restaurant in Huntersville. Dressler’s generously provided the food at cost. The wine was provided by Grapevine Distributors. All proceeds beyond cost went to the JFS Tzedakah fund. Overall, the congregation raised $2,485.00. Moreover, the congregation and larger communi ty had the opportunity to leam about the mission and vision of Jewish Family Services and the crucial role it plays in the commu nity. Thanks go to John Dressier for supporting JFS and so many other causes. He has just opened a new restaurant called Dressler’s Metro. If you visit either location, please thank them for the support. Thanks also to Betty and Joel Cohen, the owners of Grapevine Distributors for their generous donation of wine and thanks to King Green and Bentz Associates for their sponsorship of the event. ^
