The Charlotte Jewish News - December 2010- Page 29 ^ Jewish Family Services ^ Jewish Family Services of Greater Charlotte, the Year in Review The year 2010: busy and pro ductive for Jewish Family Services. Due to the economic downturn there was an increased need for all of the services provid ed by JFS. As a result of your sup port, as well as an incredible staff and board of directors, JFS was able to assist and empower many people in our community. Therapy Services In 2010 the JFS professional staff of licensed therapists provid ed 2,018 therapy sessions, an 18% increase over last year Food Pantry The JFS food pantry experi enced tremendous use again this year The food pantry is utilized nearly every day by someone in our community who might other wise have gone hungry. Over the past twelve months, 2,399 families utilized the JFS food pantry, a 6% increase from last year An aver age of 200 families and individu als accessed the pantry each month. The JFS Food Pantry pro vides food, personal care items and other necessities to help indi viduals and families through diffi cult times until independence is re-established. The JFS Mitzvah Basket pro ceeds help stock the food pantry and purchase store coupons for perishable food items. Over the last year, the Mitzvah Basket pro gram brought in $1,407 of income and food to replenish the JFS food pantry. In addition, the Mitzvah Basket program raised the com munity’s awareness about hunger in the Charlotte Jewish Community. Senior Outreach Services The JFS Senior Outreach Program provided Jewish pro gramming and community inter action to over 150 seniors who are homebound or live in nursing, independent, and assisted living facilities across Charlotte. In October 2010, Temple Israel and Jewish Family Services col laborated to initiate a program called Simchas for Seniors. With the generous assistance of the BJH Foundation for Senior Services Grant and the Etta and Louis Greenspon Senior Endowment, we are able to provide an enrich ing program in a warm friendly environment for seniors to cele brate Jewish holidays and tradi tions with their peers. We also pro vide many resources for vital serv ices that seniors in the community may require. The Senior Outreach Program provided 95 programs on Jewish education, Shabbat and holiday services, inter-genera- tional programs, culture and socialization. Community Outreach Information and referrals are given on a daily basis to people who contact JFS. Callers with various needs dis cuss issues with JFS staff and receive recommendations. The JFS Case Manager made over 424 referrals to community agencies this year and conducted 488 case management sessions, an 18% increase from last year JFS took the lead on the devel opment and implementation of Project Noah, a collaborative ini tiative of the Charlotte Jewish community providing supportive services which assisted and empowered members of our Jewish community affected by the current economic downturn. This project provided vocational coun seling, an on-line job board, sup port groups, educational work shops, financial resources, and pro-bono professional services. This past year JFS revised the Community Tzedakah Loan Fund Criteria in order to increase the amount of assistance available to individuals and families. JFS pro fessional staff assisted 58 individ uals and families requesting emer gency financial assistance through the Community Tzedakah Fund, a 25%) increase from last year, and distributed $30,285 in assistance, a 54%) increase from last year. Parenting Programs JFS Parenting Place continued to develop and implement ongoing Parent Workshops and Resources, in collabo ration with the Levine- Sklut Judaic Library and the LJCC. JFS also offered a new very successful workshop series called Love and Logic which teaches parents the skills needed for raising happy, responsible, respectful chil dren. Mitzvah Maker Volunteers JFS volunteers logged close to 1,000 hours assisting in many capacities, a 6%o increase from last year. Trained volunteers were matched with persons seek ing friendly visitation, telephone companionship, or transportation to doctors or shopping. For 30 years, Jewish Family Services has been the heart of our community, offering a helping hand that people can count on in times of need.
