The Charlotte Jewish News - January 2011 - Page 11 Yom Gemilut Hasadim: A Day of Deeds and Compassion with Temple Israel In collaboration with Temple Israel, Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, Covenant Presbyterian Church and AmeriCorps, we are honoring the spirit of Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. by planting the seeds of an engaging and nourishing Outdoor Classroom at Turning Point Academy. The vision is a natural oasis amidst the asphalt of the city’s urban core. The project site is located on site at Turning Point Academy, 2300 West Sugar Creek Road, Charlotte, NC. We will kick-off the event with a community meet and greet dessert event to be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church, on Sunday, January 16, from 6:30 PM-8:30 PM. On Monday, Martin Luther King Day, January 17, we will be meeting from 8 AM-5 PM at Turning Point Academy where the project site will begin to evolve from an open green space to a ver dant outdoor classroom and learn ing playground, designed for bio diversity and ecological health. Torah on Tap Shabbat Dinner January 21, at 7 PM Join Torah on Tap (Young Adults ages 21-40) for our Family Shabbat Dinner. We will be singing, dining and studying the origins of Shabbat customs. Sisterhood Shabbat January 15 This event is quickly approach ing the weekend of January 15 (Parshat B’Shalach). If you are a member of Sisterhood, or planning on becoming one, this is an excel lent opportunity to enjoy the camaraderie of Sisterhood while being a part of Shabbat evening and Shabbat morning services. No worries if you don’t read Hebrew or can’t read Torah, we have a part for you. From English prayers to ushering to baking, we can use you and your talents. What do all of these foods have in common? Kids in the Kitchen at Chabad of Ballantyne. Each Monday, 14 junior chefs come together to cook, mix, bake, roll and taste delicious foods that they made all by themselves. The theme for this ses sion was Blessings on Food. Each week we learnt about a new blessing and baked or cooked foods that were connected to it. For example, the week we talked about the bracha of Hamotzi, we made pizza. The best thing is that at the end of the her own cookbook complete with all the recipes and pictures of what they made. Join us for our next Kids in the Kitchen starting on January 10. Kavanah Service Announcing the return of Kavanah, Temple Israel’s very popular Kavanah service returns on January 8 at 10 AM. The Kavanah service is an experience in focused Jewish prayer which combines tradition, meditation and the rhythm of Jewish prayer. Anyone searching for a sense of the spiritual in Jewish prayer is welcome. We welcome all in casu al attire to be a part of this exciting new style of alternative service at Temple Israel. Be prepared not only to experience the beauty of Jewish prayer but also the wonder and stimulation of open and hon est Torah Study during the service. Kavanah service will be led by Rabbi Murray Ezring. Java and Jeans Java and Jeans makes its 2011 debut at Temple Israel on January 22 at 10 AM. Java and Jeans is an informal alternative service for those who wish to learn the Shabbat morning service, the structure of the service as well as the music of Shabbat morning. Java and Jeans will be led by Rabbi Faith Cantor.
