Stacy Gorelick Receives 2010
Kipnis-Wilson Friedland Award
The Kipnis-Wilson Friedland
Award honors extraordinary
Lions from the Federation who
embody the values of the Lion of
Judah - great philanthropists
and activists who have made an
invaluable positive and lasting
impact on the Jewish community.
Recipients from various Jewish
Federations of North America
are honored at the International
Lion of Judah Conference. In
November, Stacy Gorelick,
Charlotte’s 2010 Kipnis-Wilson
Friedland Award winner, was
honored at the International
Lion of Judah Conference in
New Orleans. Previous award
recipients from our community
include Bobbi Bernstein (2004)
and Jill Newman (2006).
In Charlotte, North Carohna,
the name Stacy Gorehck is syn
onymous with tzedakah.
As a mother and member of
the Jewish community, Stacy is
always challenging us to do
more -to lead by example, to
inspire others, to make our com
munity a better place for our
children and grandchildren.
From the time she was a
young teen, Stacy learned just
how important it was to give
back to the community. On a
mission to Israel with her par
ents, she sat in on a caucus and
made a first-time gift of $50
when she was just twelve years
old. “I first visited Israel as a
teenager with my family. Seeing
every aspect of Jewish life all
around me, I felt what it really
meant to be a member of the
Jewish People,” said Stacy.
Stacy’s parents made federa
tion giving a priority. According
to Stacy, “They always did more
than they could afford, thereby
setting the example for my
brother and me.”
After marrying into a philan
thropic family and moving to
Charlotte, Stacy began a life of
volunteerism. She recognized
right away that Charlotte lacked
a leadership program to train and
expose young adults to the best
Jewish thinkers in the field. She
even inspired Don and Bobbi
Bernstein to provide the funding
for what was to become The
Bernstein Leadership Group,
currently graduating its seventh
class of young leaders from the
18 month program.
Stacy has held many impor
tant volunteer jobs throughout
the Jewish community. She
served as President of the
Federation’s Women’s Division
and co-chaired The Main Event.
She served on the Charlotte
Jewish Day School board for ten
years, chaired the Day School
Annual Fund, served on the
Temple board and the JCC
Executive Board. To encourage
young women to become Lions
of Judah, she co-chaired the
Lions for two years and met with
great success. The first year six
new Lions joined and eleven
women became Lions of Judah
the second year
Today, Stacy is filled with a
sense of pride as her children
have followed her example. Two
of Stacy’s four children have cel
ebrated their b’nei mitzvah. In
lieu of gifts they each requested
donations for projects of their

program in Rwanda, while her
daughter chose a Youth Center
run by the Ethiopian National
Project.
Currently serving as Major
Gifts chair for the Federation,
Stacy often speaks passionately
about leaving a legacy. When
asked about creating an endow
ment for the Jewish Federation,
Stacy said, “As Todd and I con
stantly tell our children, the
measure of goodness is how we
treat other people. This is the
essence of Jewish values. Our
schools and synagogues, Jewish
Community Center and social
service agencies enable us to
treat people with kindness and
dignity; they perpetuate our val
ues through education, strength
en families, and foster relation
ships that tie our people together
in Charlotte and around the
world. Endowing my Jewish
Federation gift is how I will
transmit my Jewish values for
many generations to come.” ^
