The Charlotte Jewish News -January 2011 - Page 28 ^ Jewish Family Services ^ Thank You from JFS In November, the Social Action Committee of the Lake Norman Jewish Congregation hosted two Wine Dinners at Dressler’s restau rant in Birkdale Village, to benefit Jewish Family Services. The par ticipants enjoyed a delicious din ner paired with various wines as they bid for prizes raffled off to benefit JFS. The dinner featured a four-course meal with wine to compliment each dish, ending with Mom’s Cheesecake for dessert. The benefit raised over $2500 for JFS. Left to right: Summer Hall, Lisa Alexander, John Kurti, Maya Kellman (back), Cathy Bentz, Ross Kellman Ellen Engelhardt, JFS Board President and Stephanie Starr, Executive Director of JFS, attend ed the fundraisers and talked to the group about Jewish Family Services programs and services. Ellen says, “The Lake Norman Jewish Congregation has ele vated the notion of Celebrating the Good Times to an art form. An ever-expand ing circle of Jewish friends who believe in the good things that come from being together, this is the congregation to watch. Think of your child hood Friday evening dinners at shul, weekday carpools with Jewish friends to and from Hebrew school, your childhood Sunday evenings at the local Chinese restaurant.” Maya Kellman, Chairperson of Lake Norman Jewish Congregation Social Action Committee, worked directly with Dressler’s General Manager, John Glenn, in coordinating the event. Owners Jon and Kim Dressier donated the entire profit of the dinner to JFS. Lake Norman Social Action Committee member Ken Spatz worked with Betty and Joel Cohen, owners of Grapevine Distributors, who donated all of the wine for the event. Maya Kellman, Chair of the Left to right: Joan Weider, Paula Freivogal, John Weider, Rick Freivogal Lake Norman Social Action Committee commented, “Of course the entire evening would not have been possible without the Lake Norman Jewish Congregation Social Action Committee. The committee mem bers are Ken Spatz, David Koster, Rhonda Nicholson, and myself I am very fortunate to be able to chair such an amazing committee. I would also like to thank JFS for giving us the opportunity to give back to them.” JFS is deeply grateful to Lake Norman Jewish Congregation par ticipants, as well as the sponsors; Dressler’s Restaurant, Grapevine Distributors, King Green Landscaping, the law firm of Bentz and Associates, and of course all of the guests who attended. Many groups throughout our community came together to help JFS fulfill the needs of our clients for Thanksgiving and Hanukkah. We would like to thank all of you for your generous support. Entire Thanksgiving meals, including whole turkeys, gravy, stuffing, green beans, rolls and pumpkin pie were donated to several Jewish families who are struggling to make ends meet. Numerous gener ous individuals in our community stopped by to donate Hanukkah gifts, cards, toys, menorahs, gift cards, wrapping paper and food to help clients of JFS. These strug gling families were very apprecia tive to receive a gift that allows them a small luxury such as a movie, a haircut, or a toy. The Rhonda and Andy Nicholson. families who received the gifts and food told us that without the help of JFS and your generosity they would have had nothing spe cial to eat on the holiday and no gifts or treats for their children. We would like to thank the fol lowing groups and businesses for their assistance with all the gifts, toys and food: Jewish Federation, Charlotte Chapter of Hadassah, Lake Norman Hadassah, Shalom Club at Sun City, Sun City Chavurah, Charlotte Jewish Day School, Levine JCC, Temple Israel, Temple Beth El and Temple Beth El Religious School and Staff, Bat Mitzvah Club of Congregation Ohr Ha Torah, Charlotte Jewish Preschool, Phil’s Deli/Phil, Denise, and Amy Levine, Austin Canvas & Awning/David Jacobson, Dr. Leonard and Barbara Feld, Alan Raznick and Robyn Benjamin, Tracy and Larry Brown and fami ly, Stacy and Todd Gorelick and family, and Pamela Bernstein. The generosity of our commu nity makes it possible for Jewish Family Services to meet the grow ing numbers of those who seek our help. Every dollar donated trans lates to direct service to family, friends and neighbors who strug gle with critical issues related to aging, parenting, illness, job loss, disability or poverty. Thank you for supporting us so that we can empower others.
