The Charlotte Jewish News - April 2011 - Page 11 Leaving a Legacy of Our Own By Brett Goodman I’ve never thought of myself as someone who eould establish a legaey gift. To me, legaey gifts are established by individuals and families with reeognizable names and enormous amounts of wealth. They make gifts to eharities and universities that have buildings bearing their family name. I do not fit into that eategory. I grew up in Charlotte and have seen our Jewish eommunity grow in ways that no one eould have ever imagined. My family has always been supportive of our Jewish eommunity and my parents taught me that I had that same responsibility. So, over the years and to the best of our ability, Leigh Anne and I have eontributed to our favorite Jewish organizations. Our eommitment as volunteers helps to bridge the gap between the ehari- table gifts we wish we eould make and those that our budget would allow. Many years ago I was inspired to beeome involved with Jewish Family Serviees (JFS) beeause of their mission to serve the most vulnerable members of our eommunity. I also served on the board of the Foundation for the Charlotte Jewish Community (FCJC), as a representative of JFS. During that time I attended board meetings, breakfast meetings and other eom munity events, and listened to Phil Warshauer as he explained the many different ways that eaeh of us ean make a legaey gift to sup port our favorite Jewish organiza tion. For those unfamiliar with Phil, he serves our eommunity as the exeeutive direetor of the Foundation for the Charlotte Jewish Community. His role is to assist our Jewish organizations and all of us on an individual basis with long-term philanthropy. I learned about the Book of Life Soeiety and how it serves our eommunity in reeognizing those individuals and families who have made sueh gifts. While I supported the Book of Life projeet as an FCJC and JFS Board member, I never thought it applied to me. I ean remember the moment that the “light went off in my head” and I began thinking a bit differently about the Book of Life and our ability to ereate our own legaey. It happened at a morning breakfast meeting diseussing endowments with members of the Jewish Family Serviees board. There had been many similar plan ning meetings of this nature as we diseussed how to build endow ments to support the future needs of Jewish Family Serviees and the members of our eommunity who are so dependent on the serviees that JFS provides. But this time, for the first time, I realized there were more ways to make legaey gifts than I had imagined, ways that Leigh Anne and I eould make an additional gift without impaet- ing our lifestyle or budget. In faet, gifts of this nature do not even require a gift of any eurrent assets, eash or stoek. All it takes is a promise. In our ease this promise eomes in the form of a life insur- anee benefieiary form. I eould have just as easily used a benefiei ary form for an IRA or Corporate Retirement plan. And it was easy. I eontaeted my life insuranee I Levine Cancer Institute Groundbreaking Ceremony agent, who sent me a form, signed it and it was done. I now understand that we all have the ability and finaneial resourees to leave a legaey of our own. You do, too. It is easy and does not require enormous wealth but rather an interest in making our eommunity, our world a better plaee. As I look at the eurrent members of the Book of Life Soeiety I see many familiar names, but it is the names that are missing that impaet me more. Eaeh one of you has the ability to make a differenee and leave your own legaey. I am proud to say that Leigh Anne and I have made a eommit ment to support the future of our Jewish eommunity with our lega ey gift. We invite you to join us. for tliL‘ rnp"|yV-liarlot[c Jewish i.Communitv For additional assistanee in ere- ating your own lasting legaey please eontaet Phil Warshauer, Exeeutive Direetor, Foundation for the Charlotte Jewish Community at 704-973-4544 or pwarshauer@eharlottejewish- foundation.org. ^ CELEBRATE OUR PRECIOUS LEGACY BY INVESTING IN THE GONTINUING Ml RAGLE OF THE JEWISH HOMELAND IISRAEL BONDS Member FINRA.
