Young Tennis Ace Performing Well on the National Stage

Nationally ranked sixth-grade
tennis player Daniel Belovs, 11,
got a “late start,” aeeording to his
father, Ivan Belovs, a former pro
fessional Russian hoekey player.
Daniel started playing tennis at 8.
“Most sueeessful players in all

3,” said Daniel’s eoaeh, Greg

Beeause Daniel is “very naturally
athletie, he was able to develop
and improve quiekly.”
It was evident early that Daniel,
who lives in south Charlotte, had
talent.
“After four months (of training
just a few times a week), he played
his first tournament and eompeted
equally with kids who have been
playing for a eouple of years,” said
Belovs.
Along with tennis, Daniel also
was playing hoekey, but in 2009
he deeided to stop to devote more
time to tennis.
“After that, he qualified to play
some national tournaments and
started eompeting on a national

Daniel is now making up for
lost time. In the Boys 12-and-
under division, he was ranked ear
lier this year at No. 230 nationally.
No. 17 in North Carolina and No.
49 in the United States Tennis
Assoeiation’s Southern Seetion.
“The Southern Seetion is
biggest seetion in the eountry,”
said Belovs, “ft ineludes North
Carolina, South Carolina,
Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi,
Louisiana, Tennessee, Kentueky
and Arkansas.”
Daniel is “quiekly moving up
all eategories,” said O’Connor.
“During winter break, Daniel
eompeted in the Junior Orange
Bowl in Miami,” said O’Connor.
“This tournament hosts the best
juniors from every eontinent of the
globe. All the greats - ineluding
Andre Agassi, Jim Courier - have
all eompeted in this tournament.”
After the Junior Orange Bowl,
Daniel traveled to Tueson, AZ, to
eompete in the USTA National
Winter Championships. He defeat
ed Ben Goldberg 7-5, 6-4 to win
the Boys 12 Singles Consolation
Southeast Draw.
Daniel was seheduled to play
the USTA National Open
Championships in Columbus, GA,
on February 26-28 and plans to
partieipate in the USTA BG 12
National Spring Championships at
Delray Beaeh, FL, in April.
This is Daniel’s first year being
home-sehooled. He has lessons

the Levine JCC will begin eon-
struetion of three additional
lighted tennis eourts. These
eourts will be loeated up on the
eurrent southern soeeer field.
The eourts are designed with an
above ground watering system to
minimize winter freezing and to
provide year-round play to our
membership.

teehnique so that he ean be

ally start to develop some
weapons that will serve him well
as he gets older and starts eompet
ing for a eollege seholarship, or
potentially a playing eareer,” said
O’Connor. ^
