Old friends, new acquain tances, and visitors gather to take a break from the hectic routine of the week, to worship together, and to be part of the Havurah “family.” The haimisch flavor of our service is a result, perhaps, of our partici patory tradition: members of the Havurah lead our services. We cel ebrate the Sabbath in a relaxed atmosphere that makes way for both the contemplative and joyful elements of the Saturday morning prayers. And then we extend the celebration with a pot-luck lunch and the opportunity for long-time members and newcomers alike to relax and enjoy each others’ com pany. This month’s service begins at 10 AM on April 16. We invite you to join us. To learn more, check out our website or contact us by phone or e-mail (see informa tion below). In addition to services, we are always happy to invite participa tion in our ongoing mitzvah activi ties: People are always needed at the Dilworth Soup Kitchen which pro vides nourishing meals and a warm welcome to those in need. Visit the kitchen on Facebook: www.facebook.com/group.php7gi d=77134194660 for more infor mation about this vibrant commu nity resource. And helping hands are welcome at “Project Linus” where Havurah members and friends meet to pro duce hand-made “security-blan kets” for children who are serious ly ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need. No experience is needed and there’s a job for everyone. We also invite teens to become part of our newly formed Havurat Tikvah Teen Group. Last month’s “Challah Making! Movie! More!” was a BYOB (bring your own bowl ... and wooden spoon) activ ity that was enjoyed by all who attended. And although our Purim cele brations are behind us, we want to extend a warm thank you to Rabbi Marc Wilson, who joined us for the holiday. Rabbi Wilson’s wisdom, wit, and warmth delighted us and made our celebration all the more memorable. Havurat Tikvah is an affiliate of Jewish Reconstructionist Federation the Jewish Reconstructionist Federation, providing a comfort able, family atmosphere where all Jews can feel welcome. Our Sunday School, with its exciting curriculum and opportunities for B’nai Mitzvah preparation, is open to Havurat Tikvah member fami lies. We invite you to visit, get to know us, and become part of our growing congregation of nearly 60 households. In the past, the workday ended when we left the workplace to return home. Now, thanks to our Blackberries, iPads and other ubiq uitous wireless connections, our work follows us wherever we go. As the boundaries between pro fessional and personal life disinte grate, and what is important is being replaced by what is thought to be urgent, the concept of a day of rest has never been more outdat ed, and more necessary. If you had the will and the means to “get away from it all,” what might you gain? Might you be more productive if, instead of multi-tasking, you turned off all distractions and focused on what mattered most? Might the quality of your living be deeper, richer, if you incorporated sufficient time for rest and restoration? It is against this backdrop that Charlotte’s Jewish Learning Institute unveils a new course, “Oasis in Time: The Gift of Shabbat in a 24/7 World.” Over six weeks, students will have the opportunity to examine essential dilemmas of modem life, and dis cover remedies in the age-old par adigm of Shabbat. Through the lens of “Oasis in Time,” students will be provided with the opportu nity to reclaim a sense of serenity in their lives and make their days more fulfilled and meaningful. The course will familiarize stu dents with the traditions and rituals of Shabbat and explore the ways in which they provide a refreshing perspective on such fundamental concepts as work and rest, peace and love, pleasure and synthesis. Students who have never experi enced Shabbat will find stimulat ing and thought-provoking new perspectives on achieving balance in their lives. Those who observe Shabbat will deepen and enrich their understanding. “Oasis in Time” will take you on a journey to explore how the institution of Shabbat can create a less pressured, more sociable and wholesome world. The Jewish Learning Institute invites you to join this six week class which will unravel the mys teries of Shabbat and provide vary ing levels of incorporating the psy chological, social, and cultural les sons of Shabbat into one’s life. Classes take place at Lubavitch Educational Center, 6619 Sardis Road in Charlotte. Two options are available: Tuesday evenings beginning May 10th from 7:30-9 PM taught by Rabbi Yossi Groner; or Wednesday morning classes are offered from 11 AM-12:30 PM beginning May 11 and are taught by Rabbi Shlomo Cohen. The cost of the course is $85 per person or $150 for a couple. Textbooks are included in the fee and PowerPoint presentations accompany each interactive class. Lessons are all recorded and cds may be pur chased after the course. To sign up for “Oasis in Time,” call 704-366- 3984, or email jli@chabadnc.org. You can also find more informa tion at the JLI website, www.myjli.org. It is noteworthy that JLI courses are offered in over 300 cities around the world and are attended by tens of thousands of students each trimester. ^ Hebrew School Opening in Ballantyne h A Hebrew School is opening at the Chabad Jewish Center of Ballantyne for 2011-2012.
