The Charlotte Jewish News - May 2011 - Page 12 Temple Beth Temple Emanuel Hosts Third Annual Wisdom of El Anshel Solomon Award Dinner on June 2 Mitzvah 2011 From generation to generation we earry on with the riehness of tradition and the promise of tomorrow. The eommunity is eordially invited to join Temple Beth El for Congregational Shabbat morning worship on May 15 at 11 AM, as the members of the 2011 Anshei Mitzvah elass are ealled to the Torah. This dedieated group will lead the eongregation in a joyous eelebration of Shabbat eulminat- ing two years of intense study. Diekie Spargo, on Thursday, June 2, at Rodi Restaurant at The Loft @245 West in Gastonia, NC. Started in 2009, FIope4Gaston was developed by Rev. Spargo and the eongregants at Bethlehem Baptist Chureh. Reeognizing poverty and need in our midst, they organized more than 5,000 vol unteers from ehurehes aeross Gastonia to fix deeaying homes in the eity’s Flighland Community. Through their efforts, more than 90 homes have been renovated - replaeing roofs, floors, walls and more. In addition, over 30,000 people have been pro vided food, elothing and home items at free Flea Markets and Flarvest of Flope food bank. FIope4Gaston, as refleeted in its motto, “God’s People Helping God’s People” truly embodies the wisdom of King Solomon. Please join us for this speeial evening. Beth Shalom Announces 4th Annual Yom Hashoah Program Holocaust Day of Remembrance Event Highlighted by Keynote Speaker Professor Thomas Pegelow Kaplan Beth Shalom of Lake Norman (www.bslkn.org) announeed the details of its fourth annual Yom Hashoah Program. This Day of Remembranee honors the 6 mil lion Jews who were lost in the Holoeaust. The program will be held on Thursday, May 5 at 6:30 PM at St. Alban’s Episeopal Chureh at 301 Caldwell Lane in Davidson. The keynote speaker for the program will be Professor Thomas Pegelow Kaplan of Davidson College. Professor Pegelow Kaplan teaehes eourses on Holoeaust and genoeide studies, in addition to other subjeets at Davidson College. His researeh foeuses on violenee, mass media and eonstruetions of selfhood in Nazi and postwar Germany and linguistie histories of eomparative genoeide in the modem world. He is the author of The Language of Nazi Genocide: Linguistic Violence and the Struggle of Germans of Jewish Ancestry (Cambridge University Press, 2009). In addition to Professor Pegelow Kaplan, other speakers will inelude Father David Buek of St. Alban’s Episeopal Chureh and Rabbi Corey Helfand of Beth Shalom of Lake Norman. The Beth Shalom religious sehool students will also partiei- pate in the program.
