The Charlotte Jewish News - June-July 2011 - Page 15 Shalom Park to Sponsor Freedom School Summer 2011 Shalom Park will be the host of the 20th Freedom Sehool in Meeklenburg County, beginning this June. Freedom Sehools are a program ereated by the Children’s Defense Fund in Washington and Students are looking forward to attending the Freedom School this summer. supported by Freedom Sehool Partners in Charlotte. The mission of the Shalom Park Freedom Sehool is to build Jewish identity, pride and eommunity by engaging all segments of the Charlotte Jewish eommunity in a eollabora- tive effort to provide a high-quali ty, summer edueational program for at risk ehildren. The Shalom Park Freedom Sehool will eonsist of a six week summer program for fifty students from Huntingtowne Farms Elementary Sehool and Sterling Elementary Sehool, two sehools with existing partnerships with Temple Israel and Temple Beth El respeetively. Deidre Grubb and Shirley Rosen are eo- ehairing a three year eommitment to establish and build the Shalom Park Freedom Sehool as it will expand the eurrent partnerships with these two CMS sehools and ereate year round learning support to enrieh the lives of these sehol- ars. Deidre Grubb believes “This is the per- feet vehiele to demon strate the eommitment and strength of the organ izations of Shalom Park to the needs of the Charlotte eommunity. This sets a great example for all members of our eommunity as well as for other Jewish eommuni- ties around the eountry.” The Shalom Park Freedom Sehool is the first Freedom Sehool in the eountry to be sponsored solely by Jewish organizations. “I think this says a great deal about the importanee of soeial aetion within the Charlotte Jewish eommunity and our responsibility to the greater eommunity,” added eo- ehair Shirley Rosen. The sehool session will begin June 20 and run through July 29. Classes will be held in the Temple Israel elassrooms. Breakfast will be served daily at the Day Sehool, and morning reading sessions will be held in Goreliek Hall with the theater at the Levine Sklut Library ereating the opportunity for inter- aetive storytelling. All of the sup porting organizations will be involved. Freedom School teen volunteers meet with Jackie Fishman. Shalom Park Freedom Sehool is a eollaborative effort of Temple Beth El, Temple Israel, the Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte, the Levine JCC, The Charlotte Jewish Day Sehool, the Levine- Sklut Judaie Library and Resouree Center, Jewish Family Serviees and the Foundation of Shalom Park. All are exeited about the opportunity to join sueh a stellar program as Freedom Sehools Partners and make a eommitment to the importanee of soeial aetion and ehange in the greater Charlotte eommunity. A new eom- ponent unique to the Shalom Park Freedom Sehool is the addition of a Teen Board whieh will involve teen volunteers in the daily sehool aetivities during the six week pro gram. Teens from aeross the eom munity will be able to volunteer to partner with some of the seholars and then explore the values of soeial justiee, develop leadership skills, and gain an understanding of the dynamies of poverty and edueation in our eommunity. Ian Kutner and Jaekie Fishman are working with the teen volunteers on this innovative proj- eet. Volunteers from the eommunity are invited to get involved in various eapaeities sueh as read ers, field trip ehaper- ones, and shoppers. Colleetion boxes will be available around the Shalom Park eampus for eolleetion of sehool supplies and other materials. Donation boxes ean be found in the Federation offiee, the Temple Israel/Charlotte Jewish Day Sehool lobby, and Temple Beth El.
