The Charlotte Jewish News - August 2011 - Page 10 Temple Or Olam Member Spotlight: Judah Malin Temple Or Olam’s new presi dent has a vision for our eommu- nity that is several years in the making. When Judah and his wife Teresa began looking for a temple three years ago, they did so with their two young sons in mind. The boys were four and one at the time, and their parents wanted them to grow up in eommunity, to know what being Jewish means. When the Malins ehose Temple Or Olam, they ehose to do more than affiliate to an existing stmeture - they ehose to partieipate in the ereation of a Jewish presenee in the area. They knew their deeision would demand a deep and lasting level of eommitment. They embraeed that faet. Terri Malin, a teaeher by profession, beeame part of the Edueation Committee. When Judah aeeepted the nomination to be our presi dent, he brought his positive ener gy, his eommitment, and his vision of Jewish eommunity with him. “I want everyone in our eom munity to foeus on what matters,” he said. “What matters are our families, our sustenanee and our eommitment to eaeh other. That means we all get along and deal with one another direetly and respeetfully.” “When we first visited,” Judah Josh Rubin’s Plumbing, LLC LICENSED - BONDED - INSURED COMMERCIAL & RESIDENTIAL Layouts for slabs - Rough-in and Finish Water Heater Repairs and Replacement Kitchen/Bath Remodeling Toilets, Tubs, Faucets, Sink, and Disposal Repairs/Replacement - 10 YEARS EXPERIENCE - NC State Lie. #29197 SC State Lie. #M110508 704-517-4918 says, “it was kind of overwhelm ing. I mean, here were all these people from different plaees, dif ferent baekgrounds.” In faet, for a small eommunity. Temple Or Olam is amazingly diverse. Its members transeend ethnieity, ineluding folks from Latin, Afriean, Asian, and European baekgrounds, representing both Ashkenazi and Sephardie tradi tions. “At the beginning,” Judah says, “you don’t know how to reaet to anybody or anything. But then, after a while, you’re all family. You’re all friends. You eare about one another. My hope is that we ean eontinue to grow that and to extend it to whoever joins us.” Certainly, Judah has his own way of maximizing the good energy the eommunity feels at serviees and get-togethers, from joking about getting some kazoo played at every opportunity to regaling the eongregation with adviee given to him by his Unele Morty. May what he ealls his “eternal optimism” eontinue to help our eommunity grow. Temple Or Olam is an inde pendent, egalitarian eongregation that serves Cabarrus eounty and parts of Meeklenburg eounty (ineluding University City, Davidson, and Huntersville).
