The Charlotte Jewish News - August 2011 - Page 14 Temple Emanuel in Statesville Rededicates Congregation with Historical Marker Congregation Emanuel was established in 1883 by German immigrants, the most famous of whom were the Wallaee Brothers, who ran a sueeessful medieinal Herbarium business in Statesville. Their Herbarium was known inter nationally, and won awards at the Paris Exhibition in its time. The eurrent Sanetuary was dedieated in 1892, presided over by Benjamin Szold of Baltimore - father of Henrietta Szold, founder of Hadassah. So, our roots go very deep into the soil of Ameriean Jewish history. We have just eompleted our third year in the program with Rabbi Deborah Zuker. She is a wonderful spiritual leader, blessed with a beautiful voiee to lead us in prayer. Her Shabbat sermons were always a faseinating disquisition on the weekly parshah, weaving aneient themes into meaningful applieations to our modem day lives. We will miss her dearly, and we wish her a hearty Mazel Tov and best of luek at her new pulpit in Peabody, MA. So if you’re ever in the Peabody area, and are look ing for a great Rabbi to spend Shabbat with, head to Rabbi Zuker’s new eongregation. We reeently eelebrated our her itage with the dedieation of a Historieal Landmark, pietured here. This beautiful marker was designed by member Jaek Celnik, a trustee of the eongregation. Rabbi Zuker led the dedieation with a “Sheheehyanu” and an appropriate prayer. This was fol lowed by a hearty BBQ eomplete with Kosher hot dogs and ham burgers “imported” from Charlotte. It was a beautiful day and everyone had a fantastie time. Of eourse, the event was tinged bittersweet, as it was also our farewell weekend with Rabbi Zuker. Shalom, Rabbi, Thi- traot! We would like to extend an open invitation to all mem bers of the Iredell, Meeklenburg and surround ing eommunities to join our proud little eongregation in worship, and to help us wel- eome Rabbinie Fellow Aaron Weininger to his new home away from home in beautiful North Carolina. ^ Elliot Vizel, Jack Celnick.who created the historical marker, and Rabbi Deborah Zuker.
