ONGREGATIONS Temple Israel Book Club The Invisible Bridge By Julie Orringer Monday, September 19, 7:30 PM, Temple Israel The Invisible Bridge Temple Israel book elub mem bers deliberated earefully about future seleetions at their last meet ing. They ehose The Invisible Bridge by Julie Orringer for the September 19 session, beeause, while its length may give some readers pause, the praise for the book swept away any doubts we may have had. And the three- month break between meetings gives us plenty of time to read this profoundly moving novel. The eentral eharaeter in The Invisible Bridge, Andras Levi, is a promising student of arehiteeture who leaves his native Hungary to study in Paris in the late 1930s - until his seholarship is revoked when anti-Jewish laws go into effeet. As you might expeet, the trials he and his wife and their extended families faee will grow exponentially worse in the years to eome. Their happiest days, and later, their struggles, are rendered in sweeping, epie fashion. “The strength of The Invisible Bridge lies in Orringer’s ability to make us eare so deeply about the people of her all-too-real fietional world. For the time it takes to read this fine novel, and for a long time afterward, it beeomes our world too.” Copies of Julie Orringer’s The Invisible Bridge are available at the Levine-Sklut Judaie Library and the publie library and for pur- ehase at loeal bookstores or on line for about $15. Temple Israel book elub meet ings are open to all members of the eommunity, ineluding “drop-ins” and those who haven’t read the book.
