The Charlotte Jewish News - November 2011 - Page 10 Youth Visions Hebrew High-lights Hebrew High Students Lead the Way The 5772 Hebrew High school year is up and running. Students and teachers are having a great time learning together and getting to know one another. This ses sion’s theme is Jewish Leadership, and our exciting electives are all designed to develop leadership skills in our teens. One great example is Andy Harkavy’s “How to Lead the Jewish People” class. The curricu lum combines classroom exercises and discussion with visits from community leaders who use Jewish values as a basis for their work. The first guest speaker to visit the group was Dr. Frederick Greene, Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Director of Surgical Residency at Carolinas Medical Center. We are grate ful to Dr. Greene for spending time with our students and show ing them that their Jewish heritage can strengthen anything that they chose to do in life. Once a month after classes, Hebrew High holds an evening tefillah service. The October tefillah was presented by Andy Harkavy, with Ben Schine and Rachel Rappaport on guitar and Jake Kalik leading some prayers. The music and familiar prayer engaged the students and the whole school participated in our brief but meaningful service. Mickey Barack Aberman AZA By Scott Lerner Mickey Barack Aberman AZA is one of the two boys BBYO chapters in Charlotte. Our chapter has been active for over 30 years.- MBA members are also very commit ted to our Region and serve on the NC Council Board. What really makes our chapter special is our brotherhood. We always make sure everyone is included and everyone feels welcome. The year is just begin ning and we are already having fun when we get together for chapter meetings and events. At our first meeting we began planning what we were going to do to “give back” this year.
