One day a girl claiming to be the poet’s daughters arrives to take it away, send ing the writer’s life reeling. The massive wooden desk pro vides the anchor to Krauss’s mas terful novel. Consisting of four stories divided among eight chap ters and crossing decades and con tinents, the novel’s characters, all tied to this mysterious desk, include the mysteriously vanished Chilean poet, an old man in Israel, an esteemed antiques dealer track ing down the things stolen from his father by the Nazis, and an American woman studying in Oxford. The highly praised Great House: A Novel, by Nicole Krauss, should lead to a stimulat ing and informative discussion at Temple Israel’s November 15 Book Club meeting. Copies of Great House are available at the public library, the Levine- Sklut Jewish Library, at book stores and on line for under $15. Modem readers can also get a copy through Kindle. The November 15 discussion is open to all members of the community, including “drop-ins” and those who haven’t read the book.
