This year’s MLK Shabbat will be the same. Please save the date to join Temple Beth El on Friday night, January 13 at 7 PM. Through the MLK Service, we will share not only our vision for the Charlotte world of race rela tions that can be, but celebrate our accomplishments that have been — such as this past summer, when Shalom Park held its first ever, exceedingly successful. Freedom School. The Shalom Park Freedom School we were so proud to create was inspired by the 1964 Mississippi Freedom Summer Project that ran voter registration drives and taught reading to impoverished African Americans. Like those who came before us, we in Shalom Park created bridges of understanding as we hosted fifty students from Sterling Elementary School and Huntingtowne Farms Elementary. Leading our successful Freedom School was Kevin Vandiver, our Site Coordinator. When the Charlotte Observer interviewed him last May and noted the irony of a black Pentecostal Christian leading a program at a Jewish worship cen ter, he remarked, “If we stop at denominational lines or race and ethnic lines, people will fall through the cracks. We all hold the same foundational beliefs, values and mores, so it doesn’t matter what you call it.” Kevin, now in the middle of his first year at Duke Divinity School, will be the inspired preacher at this year’s MLK Service. As we will celebrate “Something Inside So Strong” in our Freedom School students - from the eponymous, motivational song sung each morning at the Freedom School pep rally - may we celebrate the “Something Inside So Strong” in all of us, which enables us to build and sustain strong bonds of con nections with our neighbors of varied races, religions and back grounds. ^ % I TEMPLE BETH EL Chanukah at Temple Beth El for Every Age and Stage **For details, see www.beth- el.com/chanukah.
