The Charlotte Jewish Preschool mis- Reflecting and Goal Setting By Dedee Goldsmith, Director, Jewish Preschool on Sardis It’s that time of year again. Time for reflecting and goal set ting, now that the new year upon us. The Jewish Preschool on Sardis is no exception to this. In this transition year for the school, now is the perfect time to look at what works, what needs change and where we want the school to go in the future. Here are some ideas in the works. What n>e feel n>e excel in: Quality: Our school provides the care, love, and expertise that exceeds anyone’s standards. The teachers are amazing in their knowledge base of child develop ment and how they practice that each and every day. From the detailed planning, to the fun activ ities, to the informative group times, our teachers work hard to ensure the success of each child. Judaism: JPS integrates our Judaica program within the con text of the day and over the course of time, keeping with the stories in the Torah as well as flowing with the plans of the secular curricu lum. Our goal of building a love for Judaism is instilled with the great stories and activities that are brought into the classroom daily. Warm environment: It’s the details, right? From the morning hugs as a greeting, to the high fives when a child accomplishes a new task, to the anecdotes that are shared with families via phone call, journal entries, at drop off or pick up, there is a sense of family we strive to cultivate over the years. Mommy & Me: What better way to learn about JPS and all it offers than to bring your little one for Mommy & Me with a Judaica twist. On Monday mornings we typically have over six families that come to meet some friends, sing some songs, play some games, and gradually make the transition to a school environ ment. Where n>e want to grow: Enrichment for 2s: Our suc cessful enrichment classes have grown over the years. Previously, enrichment has been available to sion is to provide quality pre school half day and full day pro grams to children ages one to five within a developmental and enriched Jewish environment. To achieve this mission. The Charlotte Jewish Preschool emphasizes: * The uniqueness of the indi vidual. Each child has a unique pattern and timing of develop ment, as well as in individual per sonality, learning style and family background. Our curriculum and teachers’ interactions with chil dren are responsive to these indi vidual differences. * Hands-on learning through experiencing and doing. * Curiosity so that children become eager and active learners. * Academic content of literacy and mathematics presented Charlotte Jewish Preschool LEARN - -CiRO^v ■ CONNECT through integration of classroom experiences. * Purposeful planning and interaction which supports chil dren’s growth in areas of physical, social, emotional and cognitive/ language development. ^ SATURDAY JANUARY 7 7:00 PM JEWISH^ FEDERATION 5 OF GREATER CHARLOTTE^' D ^ Inotev^fthy 3 leducot/on Art education is alive, well and thriving at CJDS and I’m so proud to be a part of it! The skills our children need in the 21st century go beyond the 3R’s. They also include critical thinking and problem solving, communication, collaboration, creativity and innovation. Art is a great wag to teach these skills. CJDS has dedicated itself to integrating art into the curriculum and the results have been fantastic! The excitement of the third graders when they presented their social studies unit, CJDS’ Travel Agency” was palpable. The students created collages to put on state travel posters and brochures to entice potential visitors. Not only did the posters show climate and natural resources, they also included information about artists or art from their state. Talk about the big picture”! Last month the fourth and fifth graders toured the Mint’s exhibit of Bearden’s collages depicting life in Mecklenburg County - the wken asked wkal he ihoujhl of the moseom said, 'it makes me happjl- Innovation, creativity and smiling, enthusiastic students Oonna lerner Art Instructor teach, and learn 1 great pi; lace to Donna Lerner (Continued on page 12)
