The Charlotte Jewish News - January 2012 - Page 9 “Israeli Film Night” with Havurat Tikvah A cold winter’s night is the per fect time to hunker down with popcorn, a movie, some lively dis cussion, and (of course) dessert. Havurat Tikvah members, guests, and friends will do just that on Saturday evening January 7 with the first of a new series of “Israeli Film Nights.” Kicking off the series is The Band’s Visit, a film fracing the events in Bet Hatikva. Located in the middle of the Negev Desert, this fictional town finds itself the mistaken destination for eight men in the Alexandria Ceremonial Police Orchestra. The men, strand ed and with no place to stay, must rely on the hospitality of an Israeli restaurant owner and her friend. In his review, Roger Ebert writes that The Band’s Visit pro vides “...an interlude involving two ‘enemies,’Arabs and Israelis, that shows them both as only ordi nary people with ordinary hopes, lives and disappointments. It has also shown us two souls with rare beauty.” For information about time and location, check our website or contact Brian Feinglass - e-mail and phone are listed below. We’ll also chase away the chill of winter on January 20 with a warm and festive family-style Shabbat evening - akin to starting the Sabbath with all your favorite relatives. We’ll gather at 6:30 PM, in the Fellowship Hall at Avondale Presbyterian Church (2821 Park Road). And we’ll greet the Sabbath bride with candlelighting, Kiddush (complete with warm, home-made challah), a kosher/ parve potluck “feast,” and plenty of Shabbat songs. If you’d like to join us, see below for contact information. You can also contact us to learn more about Havurat Tikvah social action projects. During the holiday season we participated in preparation and delivery of Friendship Trays meals and we’ll will be working with Avondale Presbyterian Church to assist them with their “Room At The Inn” ini tiatives. Our “Project Linus” group con tinues to meet monthly to produce hand-made “security-blankets” for children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need. And the Dilworth Soup Kitchen - founded by Havurat Tikvah member Allen B. Saxe - can also use enthusiastic volunteers (http ://www. facebook. com/ group. php?gid=77134194660). Finally, this month we send a hearty mazel tov to the Garrison Family on the birth of twins Levi Webb and Sofia Rose. A joint Brit Milah and Simchat Bat was held on November 13 with mohelet Dr. Laura Sinai officiating. Havurat Tikvah is an affiliate of the Jewish Reconstructionist Federation, providing a comfort able, family atmosphere where all Jews can feel welcome.
