Jewish E'lhii SAH In Memoriam: Rita Mond, Former Editor of The Charlotte Jewish News When one’s expertise, knowledge, and talents sig- nifieantly span several areas and subjeets, he or she is often referred to as a “Renaissanee Man or Woman.” Rita Mond was truly the epitome of the Renaissanee Woman, with experienee in hard seienees, talent in writing, a knaek for management, and an amaz ing ability to eook the most delieious foods. Born in Chieago, she reeeived both her Baehelor’s degree and a Master’s degree in parasitology in a time when few women even attended eollege. After working in many hospital researeh faeilities, she beeame the lab researeh manager in Cytology at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City. When she, husband Irving, and infant Darren moved to Charlotte, she began utilizing her natural aptitude in volunteerism. She was aetive in and held many board positions, ineluding president, in B’nai B’rith Women (now Jewish Women International) and the sis terhoods in both Temple Israel and Temple Beth El. In 1979, when The Charlotte Jewish News was first published, she showed the world her enor mous eapabilities as a writer, edi tor, and publisher. She and Ann Langman managed the newspaper together for many years, and when Ann left to pursue her eareer in Real Estate, Rita stayed on. Under her leadership the CJN won 10 Rita with her grandchildren: from left, David Mond, Sara Mond, Lauren Mond, Allie Michel, and Mara Michel separate awards from the National Conferenee of Jewish Federations. “She always told you what to do,” says dear friend and former eo-worker Roz Greenspon, “but Rita was always right.” Even in retirement, Rita eontin- ued to eonfribute to The Charlotte Jewish News, selling advertising and building a loyal elientele, many of whom still advertise today. Her dedieation to her family was a phenomenon. Her ehildren, Darren, Jered, and Jodi, their spouses, Staei, Elizabeth, and Gary Miehel, and her grandehil- dren, Lauren and David Mond, Sarah Mond, and Allie and Mara Miehel, were all devoted to her and will miss her very deeply. The Charlotte Jewish eommu- nity. The Charlotte Jewish News, friends, and family will all feel a great void in their lives with the passing of Rita Mond. Zichrona I ’vracha, may her memory always be a blessing. ^ JEWISH^ FEDE^RATION^ or CHE A. TEH CHAHLOT Rita with her children: from left, Jered Mond, Darren Mond, and Jodi Michel.
