By The Board of the Levine Jewish Community Center; David Van Glish, president Readers of The Charlotte Jewish News are likely aware that the Levine Jewish Community Center has made some ehanges to the sehedule for when we’re open during some Jewish holidays. The operating sehedule will remain the same during Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Shabbat. But for all other holi days, the faeility will be elosed while worship serviees are being held on Shalom Park. In other words, the “J” will elose early on all erevs or “festival openings” the night before, and open at 1 PM the following days. The LJCC staff and board stud ied this ehange for several years. We had many eonversations with Jewish eommunity leaders, pro fessional staff, and elergy. A sur vey of our Jewish members showed strong support for the pro posed ehanges. Not surprisingly, there was a lot of debate, some disagreement, and diseussion among Shalom Park partners before we ereated a eol- laborative final deeision. We addressed many eoneerns and reviewed and debated the potential issues and benefits. One of the biggest eoneerns we heard was that being open more hours on some holidays might eontribute to troubling loeal and national trends toward deelining Jewish affilia tion, observanee, and engagement. While we respeet and under stand these sentiments, the deei sion to ehange the holiday sehed ule should not eompound these trends, but may, in faet, help reverse them by eneouraging more engagement among loeal Jews and their families. Someone onee said that when ever a Jewish person or family eomes to Shalom Park, every ageney here wins. The new sehed ule and its underlying intent refleet this wisdom, and expand upon it. The LJCC’s leadership intends to use the ehange as a plat form to work with the temples to deliver enhaneed Jewish edueation and programming that eomple- ment and support the aetivities of our partner institutions. Our hope is that being open more hours, eoupled with eollabo- rative and ereative outreaeh efforts, will give loeal Jews more reasons to eome to the Park more often and engage. Over the long term, ideal results would be more people attending worship serviees and programs at the temples. More people working out at the “J,” taking arts elasses. or hanging out at the pool with friends and family. More volun teering at Jewish Family Serviees or giving to Federation. If we’re sueeessful, the entire Jewish eom munity will grow and beeome stronger. The LJCC and peer Jewish institutions, both on and off the Park, have a eommon interest in keeping the loeal Jewish eommu nity strong and vibrant. From the outset, the most important eonsid- eration in modifying our sehedule was not simply being open more hours; it was helping to realize our mission to “enrieh lives and build relationships through quality Jewish experienees.” The ehanges refleet what we feel is an appropriate and healthy re-balaneing of the needs and interests of our members and the broader Jewish eommunity, in response to today’s ehallenges and opportunities. We hope you share our exeite- ment about the new sehedule and will partner with us to aehieve its potential. ^ Charlotte Why Professionals LoveCJP! "CJP has wonderful teachers!
