The Charlotte Jewish News - April 2012 - Page 20 Davidson Interfaith Day - April 15 Sponsored by Jewish Council of Lake Norman, Charlotte Jewish Film Festival, and Daughters of Abraham As someone whose life has been shaped by interfaith pro gramming, Institute of Southern Jewish Life Fellow Claire Solomon was intrigued when she saw a flyer for “Daughters of Abraham: a youth-led group, made of up Muslim, Jewish, and Christian girls, ages 11-15” on her fall visit to Beth Shalom of Lake Norman. As she inquired further about the flyer, she learned that the group was just about to start, and had been eoneeived by eon- gregant Mariel Cupp, a seventh grader at Bailey Middle Sehool, who wanted to start an interfaith group in her area for her Bat Mitzvah projeet. Mariel attended Elk Shoals Interfaith Camp for the past two summers, and wanted to bring her eamp experienees home, by ereat- ing a youth-led group of girls who meet not to pray, or to have a for mal elass, but to have fun and be together — as any middle sehool girls like to do. Mariel’s idea is “if you get to know someone as a per son, rather than as what religion they are, you will see people as individuals and not label them.” Mariel’s idea is one we should all take to heart. Daily, Beth Shalom of Lake Norman enters into an interfaith partnership, as they share the spiritual home with St. Alban’s Episeopal Chureh. St. Mariel Alban’s has partnered with Mariel on her projeet, as has the Lake Norman Jewish Congregation and Masjid Ash-Shaheed. Others who have joined together to help Mariel’s idea eome to fruition inelude the interfaith group Kids 4 Peaee, the Direetor of Youth Ministry at St. Patriek’s Episeopal Chureh in Mooresville, NC, a for mer Davidson College Interfaith Fellow, and students from the interfaith group at Davidson College. Fast forward to Spring of 2012 and Mariel has joined forees with the Jewish Couneil of Lake Norman and the Charlotte Jewish Film Festival to present the film “David the Movie” as part of what she hopes will be “Davidson Interfaith Day.” She has written a letter to the Davidson Mayor ask ing him to support the afternoon aetivities, whieh begin with luneh on the downtown Village Green for all youth interested in partiei- pating, followed by an awareness Walk 4 Peaee eoordinated by Kids 4 Peaee, an interfaith peaee eduea- tion organization in Jerusalem and the United States. The walk will end at the Student Union at Davidson College for a sereening of “David the Movie,” a film about 11-year-old David, the son of a Brooklyn Imam, who befriends a group of Jewish boys and in the proeess breaks down interfaith barriers. The film is free and open to the publie. Donations to offset the eosts assoeiated with the film are appreeiated. Details online at WWW.DaughtersofAbraham.org.
