The Charlotte Jewish News - May 2012 - Page 12 Creating an Heirloom: Needlepoint Tallis Bags and Matching Ataras for the Whole Family Barbara Levin says she isn’t even sure how she got started. But however it was, now grandehil- dren, sons-in-law, a son, and a husband all have them: needle- pointed tallis bags with matehing ataras on the tallisim. “Truly it was just for the love of doing it,” she says. “It’s some thing that eaeh of them will have forever.” She was ably assisted in seleet- ing eolors and designs by eaeh reeipient. The grandehild (or adult) who was to reeeive the gift aeeompanied her to Yours Truly Needlepoint and expressed him- or herself by ehoosing a design and a eolor palette that was unique. And it was easy to do with Yours Truly’s vast seleetion of designs and yams. And Lynn Edelstein, owner of Yours Traly, was happy to make it easy for Barbara or any of her other elients who have made tallis bags/ataras as gifts. “Florenee Jaffa, Sandra Levine, Karen Ransenberg, even Eddie Goodman, have needlepointed Jewish themed artieles,” she says. “What eould be nieer than when a parent plaees a tallis on a ehild that was made by someone they both love?” Patty Goreliek, too, has made WORK WITH A LEADER IN CHARLOTTE REAL ESTATE ^bove,, '"(^rowd!™ Executive Realty 704-926-2544 office 704-975-8500 cell www.LepowRealtors. com rO Steve r Lepow LEADING TH E WAY TO YOUR SUCCESS tallis bags for her grandehildren. “It’s a elassie thing to do if you’re lueky enough to have grandehil dren. ... It’s very meaningful to the ehildren, it’s something they’ll have the rest of their lives; some thing made by their grandmother that they’ll have even when she’s gone.” She’s made them for four of her ten grandehildren, but the youngest is just two, so “I still have a long time till I’m done making them.” For those who don’t needle point, lessons are available, or a “surrogate” needlepointer ean be hired. For a small fee, whieh is then donated to various eharities, Naney Bernstein will needlepoint the tallis bags and ataras for Yours Traly elients. Barbara was just happy that after she made the first one, she heard the rest of her family say, “I want one, too.” So she eventually made one for eaeh of the follow ing: her husband, Jerry; her son. Each with his own tallis bag: Bob Kipnis, Josh Kipnis, Daniel Kipnis, Barbara Levin, who created each of the bags shown here, Michael Kipnis, Noah Kipnis, Jerry Levin. Binyamin and his sons Tuvia and Moshe (daughter Malya had a pie- ture needlepointed for her); her son-in-law Mark Goldsmith and his four ehildren, Brian, Traey, Jeffrey, and David; son-in-law Bob Kipnis, and his four sons, Miehael, Joshua, Noah, and Daniel; and grandsons, Dylan and Taylor Sehwaber. Both Barbara and Patty were happy to support Lynn’s Yours Truly Needlepoint beeause 100% of the profits from Yours Traly goes to various eharities. In so many ways, this is traly a beauti ful mitzvah. ^ Wofnenty hJewy Mayor Foxx Declares April 29 Hadassah Day in Queen City By Hadas Kasher, President, Charlotte Chapter of Hadassah The City of Charlotte honored Fladassah with a proelamation and deelaration of Fladassah Day dur ing the Regional Spring Conferenee April 27-29.
