The Charlotte Jewish News - May 2012 - Page 14 Davidson Students to Discuss Research Trip to Holocaust Sites Davidson College professors Dr. Thomas Pegelow Kaplan (Department of History and author of The Language of Nazi Genocide) and Dr. Seott Denham (Department of German Studies and editor of the book series Interdisciplinary German Cultural Studies) reeently led a group of Davidson College students to Poland and Germany. They eon- dueted researeh and had full aeeess to the arehives at a variety of institutions, ineluding the Ausehwitz-Birkenau Memorial, the Memorial Site of the House of the Wannsee Conferenee, and the Volkswagen Corporation in Wolfsburg. The students pre sented their preliminary find ings at the prestigious Friedrieh Meineeke Institute at the Free University in Berlin and at the Sosnowiee eampus of Silesian University; they also met with Polish and German seholars, students, members of the Jewish eom- munity, politieians, a former Hitler Youth member, and a reseuer and Righteous Among the Nations. The students, ineluding sev eral Hillel members, are looking forward to presenting their reeent- ly-eoneluded work at Shalom Park. The presentations inelude new work on the Ausehwitz orehestras, female slave labor at the City of the KdF Car, and the Jewish exhibitions at the Saehsenhausen Coneentration Camp Memorial in the GDR and the united Germany. Please join us on Monday, May 7 at 7 PM in Goreliek Hall for a panel diseus- sion on various topies relating to the students’ researeh. Please note that this event is not suitable for ehildren. The panel diseussion will be followed by refreshments. This event is open to the entire Charlotte eommunity. ^ The Floreuce Meltou Adult Miui School of Charlotte Graduates Its First Class Tommy Bell and Beau Clark present research findings at the Memorial House of the Wannsee Conference in Berlin. After two years of studying together, the members of the 1 st elass of Charlottes’ Florenee Melton Adult Mini-Sehool at the Levine-Skint Judaie Library gathered together on May 31 to eelebrate their learning aeeom- plishments. Congratulations to the Melton Students who will reeeive a Certifieate of Jewish Studies from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. During the German occupation, Ms. Wilkosz-Filo helped to hide a Jewish familyfor 18 months and saved them from deportation to a death camp.
