The Charlotte Jewish News - May 2012 - Page 9 Cemetery Expansion to Include Memorial Building 2012 will be a momentous year for the Hebrew Cemetery Assoeiation. What is in store? In the year ahead, the eemetery will embark on an impressive expan sion that nearly doubles the num ber of existing plots and will ereate a lovely new building to graee the site. The projeet ineludes surveying, grading a new building, laying out new grave areas, landseaping and other grounds improvements for the remaining six aeres of the 11- aere property. The land, whieh is loeated near the heart of Center City, was purehased by the eeme tery’s founders in 1867. A vital part of the expansion is the eonstruetion of a beautiful Memorial Building. Bill Goreliek and Mare Silverman, eo-ehairs of the Building and Capital Campaign Committee, say that the need for the building beeame apparent when the Hebrew Cemetery Board listened to requests from the Jewish eommu- nity. The Memorial Building, designed by the arehiteetural firm, LS3P, will provide spaee for smaller funerals, memorials and unveilings. The new building also will inelude bathrooms, a base for the earetakers, maintenanee equip ment storage and a proteeted area in ease of inelement weather. Rendering of the future Hebrew Cemetery Memorial Building. A large portion of the funds required for the expansion have already been raised. Mare Silverman notes, “The board eon- tinues to be so appreeiative of the eommunity’s generous eommit- ment to the Hebrew Cemetery.” Late this spring the eemetery board will launeh the publie phase of the eapital eampaign. “Partieipation in and eare of the Hebrew Cemetery demonstrate a deep faith in the future of the Jewish eommunity. It’s just the right thing to do,” shares Bill Goreliek. Kevin Levine, Hebrew Cemetery Board President, adds, “The eompletion of the site and new offerings make it more invit ing for more Jewish families to beeome Hebrew Cemetery Assoeiation members and is part of a well thought-out Master Plan that will earry the eemetery through the next deeades.” One thing that may not be eom- monly understood is that the Hebrew Cemetery of Greater Charlotte is a eommunity eeme tery, not dedieated or governed by any single synagogue. As a eom munity eemetery, it is available to all Jews, affiliated or unaffiliated. Membership in and support of the eemetery is separate from support of one’s own eongregation. The Hebrew Cemetery Assoeiation was the first Jewish organization established in Charlotte. Today the Hebrew Cemetery serves the Greater Charlotte area, ineluding parts of North and South Carolina, and remains a vital player in the life of our Jewish eommunity. The eemetery provides eare for families at the moment of their greatest need and of their greatest loss. One eannot imagine a Jewish eommunity that did not have sueh a eemetery at work, fulfilling its saered mission. But one doesn’t have to wait for a loss to eontaet the eemetery. Every week the eemetery advises families on pre-planning their eer- emonies and helps families under stand their end-of-life options. Through the pre-planning proeess, these important deeisions, made years in advanee of any need, ean refleet the individual’s wishes and ereate peaee of mind. In a similar vein, the Hebrew Cemetery is eurrently doing its part to help our Jewish eommunity plan for its own longevity. This year’s eemetery expansion and building eonstruetion eelebrate the growth of Charlotte’s vibrant Jewish eommunity. These efforts and the eommuni ty’s generous eontributions will help ereate a Jewish resting plaee for future generations. In the months ahead, the Hebrew Cemetery Assoeiation board looks forward to sharing with you the progress of this expansion.
