We are hon ored to have reeeived the award and thrilled to have new resourees to devote to the Jewish edueation of our ehildren. Sinee the founding of our sehool, Temple Or Olam has had a population of 10% speeial needs ehildren. This year, that popula tion will rise to 20%, and will inelude, among others, two ehil dren diagnosed autistie with Asperger’s designation and one ehild diagnosed with severe ADHD. We have always tried to be mindful of the faet that our ehil dren are individuals and that they V L need to be taught in a way that honors that uniqueness. This year’s elasses will expand to inelude both new eom- puter and eurrieular teeh- nologies, and both will be implemented with our ehildren’s strengths and interests in mind. The ehild with Asperger Syndrome, for example, may aeeess Torah study by memorizing genealogies. Or, he may be inter ested in ealeulating eaeh and every briek needed to ereet a tem ple in an aneient Egyptian eity. One of our ehildren with severe ADHD responds best to musieal and taetile inputs. Can we look at Jewish holidays, Jewish festivals. 0 Torah and Hebrew through the eyes of ehildren who read and leam and under stand differently? We think » we ean, and we’re pretty ^ exeited to get started. Temple Or Olam is a Jewish Renewal eommunity that serves Cabarrus eounty and parts of Meeklenburg eounty (ineluding University City, Davidson, and Huntersville).
