A Perfect Fit
By Nancy Kipnis, Create Your
Jewish Legacy Coordinator -
Foundation for the Charlotte
Jewish Community
When a pair of
shoes fits perfeetly, it
is a wonderful feeling.
You walk on air full of
energy and vitality.
After four weeks as the
Coordinator for the
Create Your Jewish
Legaey Initiative.
(CJL), I feel like I have
found the perfeet fit. I
have met with most of the ten
eommunity partners involved in
the legaey initiative. I know many
of the players, some from ehild-
hood, and some from my involve
ment in the Jewish eommunity
over the past 20 years. Eaeh organ
ization has voieed their exeitement
and uniqueness. They have agreed
to ereate CJL teams of 3-5
people who will meet
monthly, learn more about
planned giving and engage
donors who are passionate
about their organization. I
am anxious to start working
with the CJL teams individ
ually and in group training
sessions with well-known
national speakers.
From my diseussions with other
eommunities, engaged in their
own CJL efforts, I have learned the
importanee of following the sue-
eessful models already established
throughout the eountry. This
ineludes attending the planning
sessions, doing our homework and
engaging our donors in meaning
ful legaey eonversations. These
eonversations will require learning
how to listen and understand that
everyone ean leave a legaey no
matter their baekground, age, or
wealth. This exeites me. I know
that together we ean begin to ere
ate a eulture where meaningful
legaey eonversations are eommon-
plaee and eaeh of us will embraee
our ability to ereate legaeies of our
own that will assist in preserving
and sustaining our Jewish eommu
nity. ^

Operation Understanding
Every summer, Jewish and African-
American high school students from the
Washington DC area set out to retrace
the steps of the civil rights movement in
America. Along the way, they befriend
one another and become more under
standing of each others’ culture. They
stopped at Shalom Park one morning in
July on their way to the Levine Museum
of the New South.
