The Charlotte Jewish News - November 2012 - Page 3 Holocaust Education Day ^ Stan Greenspan Charitable Trust Commits to Program Continuation The Jewish Federation Com munity Relations Couneil (JCRC) builds relationships throughout the greater eommu- nity and advoeates on issues of eoneem to the Jewish eommu- nity. Over the years, we have worked diligently with both the Charlotte-Meeklenburg Sehools (CMS) and Union County Pub- lie Sehools (UCPS) to promote diversity in the publie sehool system and provide edueational resourees on a range of topies. As a Jewish eommunity, we have a strong eommitment to edueation and unique role to play in Floloeaust edueation in partieular. The Holoeaust is an example of the eonsequenees of prejudiee, raeism, anti-Semi tism, and stereotyping. By pro viding speakers, resourees and programming, we ean help stu dents develop an understanding of the uses and abuses of power and the roles and responsibili ties of eitizens, organizations, and nations to never again re main silent and indifferent in the faee of oppression. Last April, 117 students from elass at Sun Valley Middle Sehool attended a workshop for Holoeaust edueation on Shalom Park. Coordinated by the Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte, students partieipated in a range of aetivities to learn the history of the Holoeaust and draw on those lessons of toleranee and understanding to ereate a more peaeeful future. As part of a full day of pro gramming, the group listened to Holoeaust Survivor Suly Chenkin tell her story; they learned of the many Jewish and Israeli eontributions to the world from the Community Shlieha Mor Green; small groups partie ipated in the Levine Jewish Community Center’s Butterfly Projeet, viewed the Kinder- Transport exhibit on loan from the North Carolina Couneil on the Holoeaust, and took a deeper look at topies ranging from Nazi Propaganda to Jewish Resist- anee in lessons and diseussions led by loeal Charlotte edueators with materials provided by the Levine Sklut Judaie Library and Resouree Center. One student shared, “I think that this trip has opened my eyes. It really gave me a better feel and greater knowledge about the Holoeaust and my per sonal ethieal values!” Through the lively diseussions and hands on aetivities, the students and faeulty were greatly impaeted. Special thanks to the Stan Greenspon Charitable Trust for supporting Holocaust education. Miehael O’Hagan, a teaeher from Sun Valley Middle Sehool, said “I think that as we move forward in the years to eome, we will provide future generations of students a deep understanding of what oeeurred and the tools to help guard them and the world from hatred and intoleranee.” Following the sueeess of this initial program, the Stan Green spon Charitable Trust has pro vided a generous donation to eontinue these programs for the upeoming year. Stan Greenspon shared his eommitment to the program, “My interest in the Holoeaust Edueation Program i I t $ t By Roni Amitai, community shlieha On Saturday evening, No vember 4, 1995 - the 12th of Heshvan, 5756 - Israel’s Prime Minister and Defense Minister Yitzhak Rabin was shot to death by a Jewish assassin who didn’t agree with his peaee poliey. The assassination took plaee as Rabin was leaving a rally under the slogan “Yes to Peaee - No to Violenee.” Yitzhak Rabin gave his life standing up for ideals he be lieved in. In his last speeeh he talked about the aetive role peo ple have in the making of peaee: “I have always believed that the majority of the people want peaee, are prepared to take risks for peaee. And you here, by eoming to this rally, along with the many who did not make it here, prove that the people truly want peaee and oppose violenee. Violenee is undermining the very foundations of Israeli demoeraey. It must be eon- demned, denouneed, and iso lated. This is not the way of the State of Israel ...” After his death the Israeli au thor Amos Oz wrote a poem in his honor: Yitzhak Rabin was murdered Because he wished to look away from wars and graves And chose to see life, and peace. Do not bless his memory Do not bless his grave Bless life And justice And freedom And wisdom And reality Because for these ideals Yitzhak Rabin was murdered. Indifferenee killed Rabin but their leader, but today, as we are looking for ways to bless his memory we should think how we ean be more involved in order to influenee and make our eommunity and state a better plaee. As Jews we are taught to earry out the mitzvah of Tikkun Olam - Give baek and help those in need. Sometimes we need to think and aet on behalf of our selves. In one of his speeehes Rabin said that one of the biggest prob- Tributes to the 2013 Annual Campaign The Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte thanks and ae- knowledges the following trib utes whieh have been made to the 2013 Annual Campaign in September 2012. My edueation has eome from meet ing survivors, hearing their sto ries, and reading. I am pleased to have the opportunity, through partnership with the Jewish Fed eration of Greater Charlotte, to be able to bring awareness and edueation of the Holoeaust to the sehool system and to keep the lessons of the Holoeaust alive for younger generations.” The Jewish Federation is grateful for this generous sup port and pleased to announee that 10 sehools from the Union County Publie Sehool system have already eommitted to par- tieipating in Holoeaust Eduea tion Workshops this year. Ignoranee and denial are two of the eauses of history repeat ing itself. Through this pro gram, students and faeulty will be edueated not only on the his tory of the Holoeaust, but also on the lessons from the Holo eaust foeusing on toleranee, un derstanding and individual responsibility in an effort to help prevent similar atroeities in the future.
