The Charlotte Jewish News - November 2012 - Page 8 Temple Israel Book Club Meetings Monday, November 12 In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler’s Berlin By Erik Larson and Thursday, November 29 (co-sponsored with Sisterhood) One More River By Mary Glick- man 7:30 at Temple Israel Erik Larson’s best selling In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler’s Berlin is “a dazzling, ad- dietively readable work that speaks volumes about why the world did not reeognize the grave threat posed by Hitler until Berlin and Europe were awash in blood and terror.” This work of novelis- tie history foeuses on the family of William E. Dodd, who in 1933 be- eame the first ambassador to Hitler’s Germany. Though Dodd’s flamboyant daughter Martha, is at first intrigued by the handsome young men of the Third Reieh and their enthusiasm for restoring Germany to a position of world prominenee, the rising ineidents of Jewish perseeution deeply eon- eem Dodd and he telegraphs these eoneerns to the US state depart ment but to no avail. In the Garden of Beasts is sure to enlighten readers about this eritieal time in world history and, in partieular, why the world did not reeognize this “gathering storm.” The seeond November book elub event on Thursday, Novem ber 29 is eo-sponsored with Sister hood. One More River by Mary Gliekman is the sweeping story of a father and son, and of the loves that transform them amid the tur- bulenee of the Ameriean South. Miekey Moe in 1962 travels up and down the Mississippi River to diseover the gripping details of his father’s life. This journey, taken at the dawn of the eivil rights era, leads him deep into the baek- woods of Mississippi and Ten nessee, where he meets with danger and unexpeeted revela tions at every turn. Only four years old when his father died, Miekey Moe is now a grown man, who must prove his pedigree to the disapproving parents of his girlfriend to win her hand in mar riage. Both award-winning books are available at the Levine-Sklut Ju- daie Library and publie libraries and at book stores or on-line for less than $15.
