The - seroll is the only ritual „ item that is essential to U Jewish eommunal exis- tenee. Every ehild ehants from it to mark the pas sage to adulthood, adults hold it high, earry it, and kiss its mantle as it passes by. There is no objeet more eentral to Jewish worship than the Torah. Even though Cabarrus County’s first and only Jewish eongregation has fewer than 40 families, we now find ourselves in possession of two different Torahs that deeply eonneet us to the faith and the sufferings of past eongre- gations far away. Most Torahs are written by one seribe (“sofer” in Hebrew). Tem ple Or Olam’s first Torah was written at least a eentury ago by at least four seribes who eame from Moravia, Maeedonia, and Eastern Europe. Fragments written by eaeh of these seribes were stitehed together to make one seroll some time in the middle of the last een tury - likely just after WWII. The many eommunities who produeed them were destroyed in the Holo- eaust. Somehow these fragments survived. And the Torah made from the remnants ended up in North Carolina - first in Weldon, now in Coneord. Coming to Temple Or Olam on November 18, the seeond seroll, whieh uses Sephardi seript, was likely written in Iraq or Iran around the time that the modem nation of Israel was founded. Many Jewish eommunities in those eountries were foreed to dissolve in retaliation for that event. 0 To both fund and eele- T brate the arrival of the new j Torah, we are hosting a major interfaith event — an other first for Cabanus County. Nationally known seribe and artist Neil Yer man will speak to interested people of all faiths on “The Five Books of Moses - First Edition.” Why an interfaith event for something that is so essential to Judaism? Beeause both these Torahs represent hope after de spair. Together, they represent the diversity of the Jewish people. Despite the painful past they sur vived, learning about these serolls ean be a pathway to future under standing between religious tradi tions. If you are interested in attend ing this interfaith, family-friendly event (Sofer Yerman is fabulous with ehildren; they are eneour- aged to partieipate in the presen tation), tiekets are available for purehase through PayPal or by mail at $10 eaeh. Children under 12 are free. Proeeeds from the event will aet as tax-deduetible donations to our eongregation’s Torah fund, and we will be very grateful for your support. The event will take plaee at 2 PM on November 18 at MeGill Baptist Chureh, 5300 Poplar Tent Rd., Coneord, NC. To purehase tiekets via PayPal, please visit www.or-olam.org and follow the signs.
