The Charlotte Jewish News - December 2012 - Page 17 Making a Lasting Impression By Sandra Goldman Cemeteries are eomplex. They require eommitment for eternity. They are an important part of the eommunity as a plaee for the liv ing to visit the final resting plaee of their loved ones. They are plaees of natural refuge and are distinetive eenterpieees, giving eharaeter and uniqueness. They are landmarks memorializing his tory, events, and people. British writer, Neil Gaiman, writes in his aeelaimed history. The Graveyard Book, “Wander any graveyard long enough and you will find it - water stained and bulging, with eraeked or broken stone, seraggly grass or rank weeds about it, and a feeling, when you reaeh it, of abandon ment.” We at the Hebrew Cemetery are very proud of our holy grounds. Although not mueh more than a deeade ago, some of Caiman’s wording might have fit, today the Hebrew Cemetery is a well-mani- eured landseape with a master plan. Our board transformed the land into a statement of serenity, honor, and eommunity. I believe that it is erueial that eemeteries need to be well-eared for in order to insure that they are eomfortable plaees to visit. The bottom line is that those who are looking to ehoose their final rest ing plaee will make their deeision, in part, based on how they em- braee the property. With this in mind, I am ex tremely grateful for the way the eommunity has embraeed the eur- rent expansion of the Hebrew Cemetery and the eonstruetion of a Memorial Building. We are pleased to announee that over 75% of the projeet already has been funded. The Leon Levine Foundation presented us, at the Annual Memorial Serviee in Sep tember, with a surprise grant ehal- lenge: It will mateh, dollar for dol lar up to $100,000, for new pledges made between now and Deeember 31. The pledges are payable over five years. In the past, the board purehased adjoining lots, added new feneing around the property, opened a new entry on Statesville Avenue and did some extensive landseaping. Now we are in the proeess of nearly doubling the number of plots available to the Greater Charlotte Jewish eommunity. As some of you have already seen, eonstruetion has already begun on the grounds. In less than a year the Memorial Building should be eompleted, housing a ehapel big enough to hold midsize funerals and unveilings, a family room for privaey, bathrooms, and maintenanee storage. The foeal point of the ehapel will be the for mer marble ark from Temple Beth El. A toueh sereen will help visi tors loeate graves. If one googles “shabby and un kempt eemetery,” one ean find nearly a million referenees in the United States alone. What a sad statement. Curb appeal is the ex terior look of a property. It is the first impression the land makes on families and visitors as they drive up. Many people look at a eeme tery to see how mueh eare is given and how well the eemetery is maintained. The looks exemplify the feeling a eemetery wishes to eonvey. And onee in a while (in this ease, only the third time in 145 years) the eemetery needs the eommunity to step up and eon- tinue to eomplete this task. Of eourse, the diffieulty with fulfilling the vision of a profes sional, beautiful eemetery is the eost. It is not as simple as budget ing for lawn eare and maehinery. If not planned aeeordingly, budg- tf- Hebrew CeTneterv Association ets deplete. Aeeess roads fall into disrepair, trees want for trimming, and struetures suffer. But with eareful planning and funding, the beauty of the eemetery ean be pre served. For this reason, all funds raised in exeess of the eonstrue tion eosts will go into an endow ment to eare for the eemetery in perpetuity. I am delighted that, thanks to the generosity of this Jewish eom munity, our Hebrew Cemetery will be neither a sad statement nor part of a gloomy statistie. Your eommitment will ensure that Caiman’s dire deseription will never apply to the Hebrew Ceme tery and that these holy grounds will always be a distinetive land mark within Charlotte. We are making a lasting impression.
