TEMPLE BETH EL MLK Shabbat to Feature Bishop Tonyia Rawls, Kick off Beth El’s 70th Birthday Celebrations Temple Beth El will usher in the MLK Weekend by eelebrating the life of the great Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and refleeting on the ways in whieh we ean eollee- tively work to bring his vision to life for a more just soeiety. Beth El’s MLK Shabbat, on Friday, January 18 at 7 PM, will mark the Charlotte eommunity’s Fourth Annual Interfaith Sermon Ex- ehange and will also kiek off Tem ple Beth El’s year of events eelebrating our 70th birthday. This year’s MLK preaeher will be Bishop Tonyia Rawls of Unity Fellowship Chureh Charlotte. She will speak not only to issues of Afriean Ameriean inelusion but also to areas of inelusion for all minorities. Bishop Rawls, a pow erhouse of vision and leadership in our eommunity, is the Founding Pastor of Unity Fellowship Chureh Charlotte, and in April 2008, was eonseerated as one of the first female bishops in the his tory of the Los Angeles-based Unity Fellowship Chureh Move ment (UFCM). She is prelate of the Southern Jurisdietion and Viee President of the National Board. Bishop Rawls is a soeial, spiritual and eriminal justiee aetivist eom- mitted to the liberation of those who are on the margins of soeiety. A highlight of our MLK serviee eaeh year is the musie. Unity Fel lowship’s dynamie and moving ehoir, direeted by UFCC’s Minis ter of Musie Reverend Leslie Oliver and joined by our Temple Beth El adult ehoir, will lift up our serviee and prayers. In a seeond eomponent of the Interfaith Sermon Exehange, Rabbi Judy Sehindler will preaeh and the Beth El adult ehoir will sing at Unity Fellowship Chureh Charlotte’s serviee on Sunday, February 3 at 10:45 AM.
