The Charlotte Jewish News - January 2013 - Page 26 News from the Hebrew Cemetery Construction is underway. As part of a long-term master plan, the Hebrew Cemetery’s five-acre expansion commenced this fall. Bradley Construction is making good progress preparing the site for the lovely new Memorial Building and related hardscape. Work at this stage primarily has involved grading, but construction of the Memorial Building’s foun dation will begin soon. The weather has been extremely coop erative, and the Hebrew Cemetery is pleased to report that the project is on schedule. On November 30, many people attended the consecration of the cemetery’s new orthodox section. A beautiful Georgian brick wall and stately large trees are located on the new section’s perimeter. Participants fasted, read psalms, and walked the area seven times. “This was a historic, once-in-a- lifetime event,” said Hebrew Circling the property seven times. Cemetery Director, Sandra Gold man. “I don’t think that there will be another consecration in my life time.” Thanks to the generous support of the Jewish community, the He brew Cemetery’s expansion and Memorial Building are more than 75% funded. To date, more than 50 families each have pledged $5000 or more toward the ceme tery’s $1.5 million funding goal. Pledges are payable over five years. The Hebrew Cemetery of Greater Charlotte is a community cemetery, not dedicated or governed by a single Jewish synagogue. As a community cemetery, it is available to all Jews, affiliated or unaffiliated. Membership in and support of the cemetery is separate from support of one’s own congregation. Family membership is just $72 per year and includes many benefits such as lower plot prices, reduced burial fees, and access to the historical section. Membership gives you the opportunity to make choices about your burial and to alleviate future stress and heartache for your loved ones. With over 600 members, we hope you will Join. To inquire about membership or to make a campaign pledge in support of the cemetery’s expansion, please contact Sandra Goldman, Director of the Hebrew Cemetery at 704-576-1859 or director@hebrewcemetery.org. At this past Sep tember’s Annual Me morial Serviee, The Leon Levine Founda tion announeed that it would the Hebrew Cemetery by offering a $100,000 matehing gift ehallenge grant. Donations made to the Hebrew Cemetery by new donors - or dona tions that represent an inereased gift by a eurrent donor - were matehed dollar for dollar up to $100,000, if made before Deeem- ber31. A quiet eampaign was well- supported by eommunity leaders earlier in 2012. The Hebrew Cemetery greatly appreeiates the generosity of Lori and Erie Sklut, Julie and Howard Levine, Patty and Bill Goreliek, Mattye and Mare Silverman, and the Berlin Family, all donors of $100,000 or more. The early, behind-the- seenes finaneial support totals $1.1 million, and was eritieal to moving the Hebrew Cemetery’s expansion plans forward. Kevin Levine, Board President, and Bill Goreliek and Mare Sil verman, Building Committee Co- Chairs, initiated Parlor Meetings this past fall to move the eam paign into its publie phase and to answer donors’ questions about the projeet. The donor response through this effort has been over whelmingly positive. As noted by Mare Silverman this fall at the Annual Memorial Hebrew Cemetery Association A rendering of the Memorial Bulding. Serviee, “This is only the seeond time in the eemetery’s 145 year history that the Hebrew Cemetery has asked the eommunity for funds.” The Hebrew Cemetery Board is extremely grateful to everyone in the Jewish eommu nity who has made a eommitment to support the eemetery’s expan sion. We look forward to sharing more updates with you soon. ^ “But I Just Grew Out Mv Bangs! bv Katva Lezin Meet the Author and Book Signing In this frank and witty memoir, Katya Lezin ehronieles the way her world was turned upside down during her year of battling eaneer.
