Dear JFS,
My four year old son is in pre
school and getting ready to go to
kindergarten. I am worried be
cause it just seems that he is not
progressing like his friends at
school. He tends to stay to him
self, can become quite fixated on
certain topics and will not consis
tently use his words to tell us what
he needs or how he feels. With all
this talk in the media about
Autism Spectrum and Asperger’s
Syndrome I am concerned that my
child shows some of the symptoms
I have read about. What should I
do to make sure he is okay?
Signed, “ConcernedMother"
Dear “Concerned Mother,”
Yonr letter is timely as Feb-
rnary is National Jewish Dis
ability Awareness month, and
yonr qnestion likely strikes a
chord with many other parents
who worry abont their child’s
development, especially as their
yonng child moves from pre
school to elementary school and
the pressnre to perform and
excel academically increases.
Preschool and yonng school age
boys and girls often show a
range of abilities and differ
ences as they develop. With the
bnzz abont Asperger’s and
Antism, many parents begin to
worry that their child may be
“on the spectrnm,” especially if
their child behaves or acts dif
ferently than peers his or her
age. Read the full answer online
