The Charlotte Jewish News - March 2013 - Page 20 Create Your Jewish Legacy (CJL) Shows Early Successes By Nancy Kipnis, Create Your Jewish Legacy Coordinator The Create Your Jewish Legaey initiative is off to a great start. To date, this eommunity- wide program has resulted in 20 donors and families (see the adja- eent list) ereating 42 unique legaey gifts to support the Jewish organizations that serve our eom- munity and have speeial meaning to the donor and their families. These legaey gifts represent an es timated $1.5 million of future gifts to our Jewish eommunity. What is a legaey gift? It is a eom- mitment to establish a deferred gift (a gift after death) to support those Jewish organizations that you supported throughout your lifetime. And, if you ask any of the legaey donors, eaeh of these individuals will tell you how easy it was to establish and that it had no impaet on their annual giving. All it takes is an update to your will or a benefieiary ehange in the benefieiary designation of your life insuranee poliey or retirement plan. While we are off to a great start it is only the beginning. This ini tiative will help ereate a eulture of legaey giving where eaeh of us will be asked to eonsider how we will be remembered and whieh or ganizations will remember us. Our early sueeesses have been realized beeause of the hard work of eaeh of our ten eommunity partner organizations and their CJL teams. These teams, eom- prised of more than 50 lay and professional leaders, meet on a regular basis. They have attended three eommunity training sessions and have either established or will establish legaey gifts of their own. “Temple Israel is proud to be an aetive partieipant in CJL,” said Barry Bobrow, Temple Israel’s Board President and member of their CJL team. “Working proae- tively with our members regard ing legaey gifts is an important way for us to assure the long term viability of our eongregation. The FCJC leadership has been strong and we’re really seeing the mo mentum build for our legaey gifts and those for all of the partieipat- ing groups.” It is important to remember that our CJL effort was designed to follow the model that has resulted in sueeessful legaey programs in many Jewish eommunities throughout the eountry. This model, in addition to the individ ual team and eommunity training sessions, requires that eaeh of the ten eommunity partner organiza tions ereate their own ease state ments and legaey plans. The ease statements deseribe the impor- tanee of legaey gifts to an organi zation’s future sueeess. These ease statements will soon be avail able on the web sites of eaeh CJL eommunity partner organization by elieking on the CJL website link. “Temple Beth El is pleased and honored to be a partieipating ageney in the CJL program,” said Marshall Lindner, leader of Tem ple Beth El’s CJL team. “Re sponse to date has been absolutely outstanding. Thanks to this new and exeiting program, we look forward to a seeure future filled with promise and assuranee that Temple Beth El will be a strong Our Jewish Community’s Newest Legacy Donors The following individuals/fam ilies have recently informed our community through FCJC or one of the ten CJL community part ners that they have created a legacy to support the future of Charlotte’s Jewish community. It started with a commit ment by each of the ten community partner organizations to reach out and educate their own constituents. It continues with the realization that legacy giving is something we all can do and ends with the understanding that legacy conversations must now be an ex pected norm in our Jewish com munity. “The Federation is thrilled to partner with Create Your Jewish Legacy to create a culture of phi lanthropy within our Jewish com munity,” said Sue Littauer, Development Director for the Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte and member of their CJL legacy team. “We will be en couraging all of our donors re gardless of their age or giving levels to take the simple, innova tive steps to make legacy gifts that are within their reach.”^ For more information on creat ing a Jewish legacy, please call Nancy Kipnis at 704-973-4554 or Phil Warshauer at 704-973-4544 or one of our ten community part ner organizations.
