Temple Beth El to Host Regional Teen Convention March 8-10
On March 8-10, the Queen City
and Shalom Park will have more
than 200 Jewish visitors. Hosted
by Temple Beth El and LIBERTY
(Beth El’s Senior Youth Group),
NFTY-SAR* Hatikvah Kallah
will bring 7th and 8th grade Jew
ish teens to Charlotte from the
Southeastern states of Alabama,
Georgia, Florida, North Carolina,
South Carolina, and Tennessee.

As the host congregation. Tem
ple Beth El is also providing an
opportunity for 6th grade Temple
Beth El youth to get a taste of the
true meaning of a NFTY-SAR
community. This event intro
duces all participating teens to
the magic of NFTY-SAR.

Many TBE families are opening
up their homes to host the teens
while others are donating their
time to volunteer throughout the
weekend. Brotherhood and Sister
hood are sponsoring meals and
helping to serve them. We appre
ciate all the hard work the teens,
parents, and staff are contributing
to ensure that NFTY-SAR teens
Shmurah Matza Available
at Ohr HaTorah
A beautiful tradition in many
Jewish communities is the use of
round Shmurah Matza for the
Passover Seder. Some of the rea
sons for this custom include that
the Shmurah Matza is the closest
replication of the original Matza
the children of Israel ate when
they left Egypt in haste. This is es
pecially true of the hand-baked
Shmurah Matza where no ma
chinery is used and the matza is
prepared and baked by hand in the
old fashioned way.
In addition the Shmurah Matza
is baked with extra care which be
gins from the time of selecting
and milling the grains for wheat.

Thus the name Shmurah which
means guarded. The matza is
made of only two ingredients, nat
ural unbleached wheat and pure
well water. The entire process of
baking the matza including the
mixing and kneading needs to be
completed in less than 18 min
utes.
The matzo is baked in an old
style brick oven fired by wood
logs which reach very high tem
perature. The average time it takes
to bake the matza is less than
three minutes. The matza bakery
shuts down production every 18
minutes and goes in to a total
