CJDS Celebrates Its Bar Mitzvah Year
It is hard to believe that Char
lotte Jewish Day Sehool is now in
our thirteenth year as a eommu-
nity day sehool and we are look
ing forward to eelebrating this
milestone. Over 525 students in
kindergarten through fifth grade
have passed through the hallways,
trailers, and elassrooms. The
sehool has grown from a small
“mom and pop” shop on the hill,
to a well-respeeted independent
sehool here in Charlotte and na
tionally in the broader realm of
Jewish Day Sehools. CJDS is now
a member of RAVSAK and is ae-
eredited by the North Carolina
Assoeiation of Independent
Sehools and the Southern Assoei
ation of Independent Sehools.
This “eoming of age” eelebra-
tion provides an opportunity to
reeognize the eontributions of all
of the parents and eommunity
members who made the eommit-
ment to Jewish edueation for their
ehildren and who had the vision
for its importanee in the Charlotte
Jewish eommunity. As it happens,
CJDS has been given a great op
portunity to eelebrate in a very
unique way. The AVI CHAI Foun
dation has offered CJDS a mateh-
ing grant for money raised
through soeial media, dollar for
dollar, up to $10,000. So we’ve
deeided to have a “Virtual Bar
Mitzvah.”
We hope that the Bar Mitzvah
will prove to re-engage our
alumni and their families, and to
raise some neeessary funds.
(Some things never ehange.) And
as a bonus, as part of this eam-
paign, we have the opportunity to
reeeive a dollar for dollar mateh
from the Avi Chai Foundation for
up to $10,000 for all donations
made through a soeial media
fundraiser. We believe that this
“Virtual Bar Mitzvah” will ae-
eomplish all of these things with
your help.
Our first CJDS graduates are
now young adults in their twen
ties, settled in other eommunities
aeross the eountry. These early
graduates and their families are
being reeognized as “Leap of
Faith” families, as their eommit-
ment to Jewish Day Sehool edu
eation truly laid the foundation for

lowed. The elass of 2000 was the
first graduating elass, and some of
the students are now in Business
Sehool, working at Fortune 500
eompanies, and working in the
medieal field. Our graduates are
reeonneeting with CJDS and shar
ing their journey’s and stories of
sueeess.
The first part of the eelebration
was the introduetion of “Flash-
baek Fridays” on Faeebook. Eaeh
Friday, elass pietures from early
grades at CJDS are posted on the
Charlotte Jewish Day Sehool
Faeebook page. Former students
and their families fioek to the
Faeebook page eaeh Friday to see
if they ean identify the students
and reminisee about the sehool
days on the hill in the trailers.
You may not be familiar with
the name, but Crowdrise, is the
most popular web platform used
for marathons and other eharity
walks. This is the template that
CJDS will be using for the Bar
Mitzvah. There will be many old
pietures and videos from the
sehool’s first days, so visiting the
page will elieit many fond mem
ories. Eaeh graduating elass will
be highlighted on the Crowdrise
page and visitors will be able to
add more photos.
