This is a perfect op portunity to introduce your neigh bors and friends to the culturally rich spirit of Shalom Park. The program will begin at 4 PM in the Sam Lerner Center of Cultural Arts with music, reflec tions, and the lighting of memorial candles by survivors. Participants will then disperse to one of the workshops listed below, which will occur simultaneously around the Park. (You will no doubt have trouble selecting just one to at tend.) Finally, the afternoon will conclude with the recitation of the Kaddish and a light reception at the Margaret and Lou Schwartz Butterfly Garden Holocaust Me morial. This Community Day of Arts and Dialogue is co-sponsored by Temple Beth El, Temple Israel, the Levine JCC, the Levine-Sklut Judaic Library and Resource Cen ter, the Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte, and Hadassah. * Recipes from the Holocaust - Stories, recipes and food will be shared as we gain insights into women’s lives in concentration camps. These Holocaust recipes reveal the power of food to recall history - both personal and collec tive - and the importance that food plays in sustaining traditions. even during tragedy. The recipes ensure a connection to a Jewish culinary legacy far older than the recipes themselves, helping us carry forward the long and rich traditions of Jewish food passed on from one generation to the next. This workshop will be held in the Dumas Activity Center. * “Pigeon” - Join us for a thought-provoking discussion fol lowing the viewing of the short film “Pigeon” by Anthony Green. The movie illustrates a central Jewish tenet: the obligation to save a life. Discussion will center on Jewish values such as gemilut hasadim (kindness to others) and tikkun olam (repairing the world), as well as traditional values that are reflected in the characters’ ac tions. This program will be held in the Levine-Sklut Judaic Library and Resource Center. * UNCe Reflections from Auschwitz - A panel of students from the University of North Car olina at Charlotte will share their experiences as participants in a course and program called “Bear ing Witness to the Past.” These students recently travelled to Krakow, Poland, where they ex plored prewar Jewish life, and journeyed to Oswiecim, Poland, where they engaged in a study tour of Auschwitz and Birkenau. The students will share their expe riences at the concentration camps, including why they went and what it meant, and they will respond to your questions. This program will take place in Luski Hall. * The Butterfly Project - This workshop will use the story of the Holocaust as a vehicle to teach what can happen when prejudice, stereotyping and discrimination are allowed to flourish. A critical aspect of the lesson is to examine what can happen when individuals and governments fail to respect and protect all people. Participants will walk away with an awareness of the effects of the Holocaust on its most innocent victims. They will also learn about our Chil dren’s Holocaust Memorial Sculp ture in the Margaret & Lou Schwartz Butterfly Garden, which commemorates the 1.5 million children who perished in the Holocaust. Participants will have the opportunity to paint a butterfly as part of a national program of remembrance. This workshop is open to students in grade 5 and above, if accompanied by an adult. Adults are also welcome on their own. RSVPs are required as there is a capacity of 50 people (www.beth-el.com/RSVP). This workshop will take place in the Weinberg Center. *Dr. Seuss Goes to War - Theodor Seuss Geisel (better known as Dr. Seuss) not only au thored and illustrated countless children’s books that lifted our childhoods, but he was also a po litical cartoonist during World War II and a powerful voice of conscience. Rabbi Ezring of Tem ple Israel and Rabbi Schindler of Temple Beth El will lead a discus sion on Geisel’s influential car toons, which advocate for political and social change and attack racism and discrimination. This program will take place in the Sam Lemer Center. ^ Charlotte Jewish Singles 35+ 2711 Randolph Road, Suite 205 Charlotte, NC 28207 704-377-2503 It’s finally here ... a Meetup for Charlotte Jewish Singles ages 35-h. Two friends, Simone Praver and Susan Marx, were meeting for a glass of wine one evening after work and were exploring the Meetup Charlotte website. They found a defunct Charlotte Jewish Singles group with hardly any members. Without further ado, they decided to get the ball rolling and become the new co-organiz ers of the new and improved Charlotte Jewish Singles Meetup Group. Within a short week, the membership tripled. The first event was held on Saturday, March 9 from 7-9 PM at the South Park Marriott bar. Everyone who came had a really nice time. Simone and Susan’s motivation to get this group bustling with new members is simple. A fim and social way to get together with other Jewish singles whether you are divorced, separated, widowed, or never married. Its purpose is not exclusively to find a match but for other locals to meet and make friendships, too. Whatever comes of it can only be positive. Simone has reached out to all the temples and the JCC to recruit new members. The interest has been terrific. If you or anyone you know is single and looking for a great way to meet a friend or a life partner, then this Charlotte Jewish Singles Meetup is the place to be. The best part is that it’s free and you can chose to come to as many or as few events as you want. There are so many people that are non- affiliated in the Jewish com munity and they hope to reach them all. Don’t miss our upcoming wine tasting at Vintner’s Wine Market in the Arboretum on Thursday, April 25. There will also be an April gallery crawl in NoDa. Call for more information. Many more events are in the works. Simone (aka “Dynamite Net- worker”) and Susan (aka “Cruise Director”) are both bustling with ideas and events to come. There’s talk of the group getting together at one of the temples for a group Seder as well. For more informa tion, please contact Simone at spraver@gmail.com or Susan at suzeinc@aol.com. Check out The Charlotte Jewish Singles Meetup at www.meetup.eom/Charlotte- Jewish-Singles-Group/. Log onto the web site and join us so that you are kept updated on event changes.
