The Charlotte Jewish News - April 2013 - Page 5 €The Art of Zikaron JFS Presents Lenore Skenazy I i I % y I i i t I i i I i By Roni Amitai, community Shlicha Every year, on the fourth day of the Jewish month of lyar, I go baek to my high sehool. Waiting for me there are the familiar faees of my elosest friends, peo ple I studied with, my old teaeh- ers, as well as new faees in the shape of eurrent students, sol diers, that like me, during my serviee, eame to the sehool that day, proudly wearing their new uniform. We all stand together in silenee while our sehool headmaster ealls out the names of our graduated student who died defending our eountry. That day is Yom Ha’Zikaron (the day of memory, Israel’s Memorial Day) - a day of Re- membranee for Israeli Fallen Soldiers and Vietims of Terror ism. Yom Fla’Zikaron is a day in Israel dedieated to the mem ory of family members and friends who lost their lives de fending our homeland. As a sol dier, I served in the easualty unit of the IDF and for me the day of Yom Fla’Zikaron is a day of deep sadness but also one of hope, personal stories, heroism, and true love of Israel and its people all over the world. As Jews we keep pride in our past and make an effort not to forget our history and eommon stories that shaped us as a peo ple. There are many ways to eommemorate our loved ones that died. As Yitzhak Rabin wrote onee: “In Israel, we do not build triumphal arehes, and we don’t have halls of fame. ... This eountry knew war, and during the battles has endured great amounts of suffering. ... We have paid the priee, and still do. It is a heavy priee to pay for the right to stake our elaim and to build a home here. And how do we repay that large group of wonderful boys and girls that paid the heavy priee for our eontinued existenee? There is no way to repay them. The little that we, the living, ean do to repay those that fell in battle is to remember and to keep their memory alive.” In Charlotte, we try to do ex- aetly that for the past three years. Flebrew High 9th and 10th graders have observed Yom Ha’Zikaron through a very meaningful projeet with our partnership region in Israel Hadera-Eiron. The projeet name is The Art of Zikaron - the art of remembering. This year the stu dents eonneeted with bereaved families from our sister eity Pardes Ghana who have lost loved ones during the wars of Israel. After learning about the lives and deaths of the soldiers, the students ereated an art proj eet in their memory. The per sonal eonneetion was made in order to forge a speeial bond be tween the youth in Charlotte and Israel’s Memorial Day. Conneeting with these families and honoring their loved ones on Yom Ha’Zikaron helps the teens to strengthen their eonnee tion to Israel and their own Jew ish identities. The teenagers will take a signifieant part in the Yom Ha’Zikaron eommunity wide eeremony, talking about their experienee and telling the stories of “their soldiers”: Pri vate Yonatan (Yoni) Bams z”l. Staff Sergeant Liron-Chaeem Yhuda z”l. Corporal Mordeehai (Mod) Cohen z”l. Captain Shay Shalom Cohen z”l, and Ser geant Shlomo Chaeem Solo- movieh z”l. Sinee 1948, more than 22,993 soldiers and eivilians have given their lives for Israel. On Yom Ha’Zikaron, we will come together to honor their memory and commemorate their sacrifice. Please join ns on Monday, April 15,6 PM in Lerner Hall for a special Yom Ha’Zikaron commnnity wide ceremony to help ns keep their memory alive. ^ Tributes to the 2013 Annual Campaign The Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte thanks and acknowledges the following tributes made Jan. 5-Mar. 8. 2013 Annnal Campaign In memory of Hannah Gurevieh By: Lev and Valentina Alperovieh In memory of Sidney Blumen- reieh, father of Sue Littauer By: Jill Baliek, Ellen Bottner, Aleen and David Epstein, Ruth and Alan Goldberg, Adrienne and Harvey Gossett, Linda Greenfield and Ira Dunst, Judy and Mel Morganstein, Dale and Larry Polsky, Jane and Mark Rabinovitz, Linda Seigel and Sue and Kim Worrel; Roz and Jerry, Linda and Ira, Donna and Burt, Robin and Steve and Ellen. 2013 Israel Fund In memory of Sidney Blumen- reieh By: Julie Lerner Levine and Howard Levine, Jenny and Rieh Rosenthal If you would like to make a Tribute to the Jewish Federa tion, please eontaet the Federa tion offiee at 704-944-6761. ^ EWISH^ FEDERATION 5 OF GREATER CHARLOTTE (Continued from page 1) That’s why it was so niee to hear from Irving.
