The Charlotte Jewish News - May 2013 - Page 10 The Excitement of Performing Tzedakah ByBecca Weiner This year at The Charlotte Jewish Pre- sehool, our students experieneed the exeite- ment of performing tzedakah from Rosh Hashanah through Shavuot. In honor of Shavuot, the holiday in whieh we remem ber reeeiving the Ten Commandments, we have listed our ten most meaningful tzedakah experienees for the sehool year: 1. Save a Child’s Heart (SACH) - In Ju- daiea elass, our students deeorated tzedakah boxes with hearts, whieh they took home and filled with money over several months. Our students brought them baek to sehool so that the money eolleeted eould be do nated to SACH. SACH is an Israel-based organization whieh provides funding to per form life-saving heart surgery for ehildren from all around the world. Our students loved that their tzedakah was being used to help siek kids. 2. Sukkot Food Drive - In September, students learned about the fall harvest hol iday, Sukkot. We talked about gathering fruits and vegetables for Sukkot and stu dents learned that not everyone ean provide food for themselves. Students learned about Jewish Family Serviees and the food pantry for people in need to get food for their fam ilies. Students brought in eanned food and other neeessities as requested by JFS so they eould stoek the pantry. 3. Leukemia Lymphoma Soeiety (LLS) - Continuing with our tradition of donating tzedakah to eharities and organizations that benefit ehildren and families, we pledged the money eolleeted at our April Shabbat programs to LLS. We donated our money through our 3s teaeher, Lisa Nagel, who is running for LLS Woman of the Year by raising funds for the organization. Eaeh dol lar donated goes toward finding a eure for blood eaneers. 4. Spay Neuter Charlotte - In January, students learned about the Jewish value tzar ba ’alei chaim, taking eare of animals. We brought in a therapy dog for students to pet and they learned the proper way to treat an imals. After that experienee, we eondueted a tzedakah projeet for Spay Neuter Char lotte. Students brought in towels and blan kets for the animals that are treated there. Our kids loved being able to take eare of animals after learning the proper way. 5. Our Sister Sehools - At the beginning of eaeh year we reaeh out to our sister sehools, Huntingtowne Farms Elementary and Sterling Elementary, to see what they need. In the fall, they requested sehool sup plies, so our students brought in so many that our hallways were lined with sehool supplies, from index eards to erasers and everything in between. As the months got eolder, we eondueted a eoat drive to donate to the elementary sehools to help keep their students warm in the winter. 6. Chanukah Toy Drive - Our annual Chanukah toy drive is a truly authentie ex perienee for our students, beeause they fre quently ehoose toys that they then donate to tzedakah. Students learn the power of giving and that not every ehild gets every thing they want. Our pre sehool parents had their students drop off toys for other ehil dren, and our students were thrilled by help ing other kids. 7. Levine Sklut Judaie Library - Our stu dents and families love going to the library where there are always fun edueational pro grams going on. Our students go to the li brary several times a month with their elasses and hear a fun story from Miss Debby. That’s why we eontribute tzedakah to LSJL. 8. Passover Food Drive - In Judaiea, stu dents learn about the foods we are allowed charlotte Jewish Preschod to eat and are not permitted to eat during Passover. So, when JFS needs Passover food for their food pantry, this is a great opportunity for our students to bring in kosher for Passover foods. It pro vides an exeellent learning opportunity plus the performing a mitzvah. 9. Shabbat - Eaeh Friday at Shabbat our students bring tzedakah to put into our tzedakah ean. One student from eaeh elass is ehosen to deposit the tzedakah. Fre quently, the students eelebrating their birth day are seleeted for the honor. Students love aetively partieipating in donating tzedakah on a weekly basis. 10. Our Summer Projeets - Tzedakah does not stop when sehool does. In the sum mer we add up the money eolleeted at Shabbat to make donations to various ehar ities and organizations that benefit ehildren, families, and edueation. Last summer we were able to make donations to A Child’s Plaee, Freedom Sehool, and Shalom Bayit.
