The Charlotte Jewish News - May 2013 - Page 12 Honoring Our Parents at the Hebrew Cemetery By Brian Yesowitch “Honor thy father and thy mother that thy days may be long upon the land whieh Adonai thy God giveth thee.” We all reeognize the fifth eom- mandment. It is sueh a eentral portion of our Jewish faith and identity that it may hold different messages for eaeh of us. For some of us, this eommand- ment may be one of the most im portant teaehings of our Torah. For others, it may be the Sunday Sehool lesson our parents made sure we adhered to during long ear trips or family vaeations. Our lives present us with many oppor tunities to perform this mitzvah of “Honor thy father and thy The construction continues. mother.” Our eontinual aets of love and respeet for our parents might explain why two of our eemetery’s most visited days are Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Judaism teaehes that the soul is indestmetible and eternal. When we visit our parents’ graves in the Hebrew Cemetery, plaee a stone, and reeite or pray The Kaddish, Security, stability, and peace of mind Mike Littauer Principal Thai's why our customers come to us, and stay with us. At CIS we do our research, and we work hard with our clients to make sure that their autos, property, business, lives, and health are protected - so they can focus on the other important things in their lives. we are praetieing a spiritual aetiv- ity that eonneets us to the souls of our parents even if we ean no longer have a physieal relation ship with them. That eonneetion is strong. That eonneetion also is what reminds us that even if we are adults with ehildren, grandehil- dren, and possibly great grand- ehildren, we are all still ehildren ourselves. Attending the eemetery on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day ean be sad for some of us, but for many, the visit is eomforting and will provide good memories and feelings. As President of the Hebrew Cemetery Assoeiation, I eneour- age you to take advantage of the spring and summer weather and to see the many improvements to our eemetery’s landseaping as well as the ongoing eonstmetion on our Memorial Building. At this time of year, the trees leaf out and pro vide niee shade from the summer sun. One of the reasons why our eemetery is so attraetive is the hard work from the many volun teer groups, ineluding the Mitzvah Day eommittee from Temple Beth El, and the Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte’s Bernstein Hebrew Cemetery of Greater Charlotte A sketch of the Chapel s interior. Leadership Group, whieh eon- tribute manpower to help beautify the grounds as well as to eare of some of the eemetery’s older headstones. Another signifieant reason why our eemetery is so lovely is the long-term eommitment and gen erosity of Charlotte’s Jewish eom- munity, whieh has invested in the eemetery’s eurrent expansion and future eare through the eapital eampaign. Jewish families with varied finaneial resourees have all eome together to eontribute what they ean, and the eampaign eon- tinues. Soon families ean honor a loved one by engraving his or her name on the Memorial Wall. The Memorial Wall will stand in perpetuity as part of our new Me morial Building on the grounds of * C'etekra-tC' * the eemetery itself. Donors may submit up to five names, with a eontribution of $1000 eaeh, payable over five years. The dol lar amount is less than a eup of eoffee a day, and is sueh a beauti ful way to express our love for those who have passed. New donors are weleome, and eurrent eligible donors simply need to eontaet the offiee to share the name(s) of those they wish to honor. People interested in partieipat- ing in the Memorial Wall eom- memoration should eontaet our personable and knowledgeable Exeeutive Direetor, Sandra Gold man at direetor@hebreweeme- tery.org or 704-576-1859.
