The Charlotte Jewish News - June-July 2013 - Page 15 Summer Shabbaton to Celebrate Liberty Ohr HaTorah will, once again, host one of its popular Friday night Shabbatons on June 21 at 7 PM. The theme of the Shabba ton will be the celebration of liberty. The Shabbaton will con nect two holidays - one Jewish and one American, both with the common theme of liberty. The Jewish holiday is the 12- 13th of the Hebrew month of Tammuz (which falls just before Independence Day) and is when Judaism in the former Soviet Union scored a victory with the release of Rabbi Yoseph Y. Schneerson, the sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe from Soviet prison. His arrest was due to his active in volvement in sustaining Jewish life in the Soviet Union and his subsequent release was seen as a ray of hope for the future of Soviet Jewry. The American holiday is the 4th of July, which celebrates America’s independence. America has become a haven for freedom where Jews can and are encour aged to practice their religion without fear of persecution. In addition, America has been the place where many Jews fleeing the horrors of the Holocaust and the hard life in the former Soviet Union have settled. America has replaced Europe as the center of Jewish life in the Diaspora. The Shabbaton will feature delicious home style food with exciting activities centered on world liberty. To reserve a place at the Shabbaton, please send your check to: 6619 Sardis Road, Char lotte, NC 28270 or visit our web site at: chabadnc.org. The cost is $18/person and $50/family. Havu- rat Tikvah, however, will start the summer by doing just that with a discussion of Mitchell Silver’s Re specting the Wicked Child. Silver’s book explores the question of why modem, enlightened, and often secular American Jews should bother with Judaism and with passing Jewish heritage to the next generation. UNC Charlotte Politi cal Science Professor Saul Bren ner will facilitate our discussion on June 1 at 7:30 PM. We invite you to join us for what promises to be a stimulating evening of lively conversation. Visit our website or contact us (see below) for details on event location. Summer plans also include our Annual Congregational Meeting on Sunday, June 23. We’ll gather in the Fellowship Hall on the Avondale Presbyterian Church campus (2821 Park Road, Char lotte) from 3 to 5 PM to vote on a new Havurat Tikvah Board and to share ideas and plans for the up coming year. The summer months find us continuing a number of ongoing Havurat Tikvah activities. Mostly Monthly Minyan can be scheduled at a member’s request; this evening service is designed for mourners, those observing a yahrzeit, or any member who would like to daven and enjoy a little Havurah fellowship. When a death occurs in a member’s family, we are always willing to schedule a special minyan at the family’s home, one of our usual minyan homes, or another appropriate lo cation. Call 704-332-4880 for more information about this month’s gathering. Social action activities don’t stop with the summer months ei ther. They come in with a smile and leave humming a Hebrew song. Walking through the halls, you can hear the sounds of lively discussion, of singing, laughter, and prayer. Imagine a child who feels the warmth and spirit of Judaism and then imagine the pride of his/her parents. Our school’s most underlying ap proach is for the children to enjoy the time spent at He brew School so that they are left with positive feelings and fond memories of their Jewish edu cation. Our program is thus carefully blended with songs, games, incentives, arts and crafts, dramatics, field trips, family celebrations, and other exciting co-curricular activities. We encourage parents to get involved, ask questions and keep in touch with our school.
