What seripture means to Jews and more with Rabbi Jonathan. $5 ineludes bagels, eoffee and fasei nating questions. ^ Living in the Tension Between Safety and Freedom Schloss Summer Lecture at Temple Beth El In the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombing, the eommu- nity is asking many questions about seeurity, on one hand, and eivil liberties, on the other. Fol lowing Friday evening Summer Shabbat Serviees on July 12, Temple Beth EFs eighth annual Sehloss Summer Leeture will ad dress the questions: “What free doms do I need to give up to be safe? What safeties do I need to give up to be free?” The panel will inelude Seott Broyles, Assistant Professor at the Charlohe Sehool of Law, who will speak to the inereasing threats to our eonstitutional rights as we ex pand our national foeus on seeu rity. Professor Broyles is an aeeomplished politieal seienee ex pert and terrorism/organized erime litigator. On the other side of the debate will be a representa tive from law enforeement who nuui TEMPLE BETH EL Tisha B’Av Commemora tion at Temple Beth El will speak to what is aetually done and what law enforeement would ideally need to do in order to keep Ameriean eitizens safe. Moderating the diseussion will be Jake Sussman, a Beth El mem ber and a lawyer with Tin Fulton Walker & Owen, who, in addition to his eriminal eases, handles eivil rights and law enforeement mis- eonduet eases. Introdueing the di alogue will be Rabbi Judy Sehindler who will briefly refleet on Jewish teaehings on this issue and on the similar struggle Israel faees when it eonfronts issues of seeurity and eivil liberties. The Sehloss Summer Leeture was established by Mare and Mat- tye Silverman in memory of Mare’s unele, Simeon Arehibald “Happy” Sehloss, Jr., who was a founder of Temple Beth El. This year’s leeture on July 12 will fol low Beth El’s 6:15 PM Summer Shabbat Serviees and a 7:30 PM Shabbat dinner.
