The Shabbaton’s theme is “King in the Field” which repre sents one of the mottos of the forthcoming month of Elul. Elul is the last month of the Jewish year and it allows us to sum up the past on prepare for the New Year which begins with Rosh Hashanah on September 5. Jewish literature has coined the month of Elul with many names, each in dicative of the month’s character. Among the names are: month of repentance, month of return, month of compassion. This is be cause we feel the need to connect with God and God reaches out to us with love and compassion. Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Fiadi, first Chabad Rebbe, used a parable with a mighty king as a metaphor. In his parable, the king takes one month of the year when he leaves his fortified palace and visits the ordinary folk in the countryside where he greets everyone with a smile and a warm embrace. Similarly, God takes the month of Elul to visit with us in our do main and greets us just the way we are with a smile and an em brace. All we need to do is turn to God by ridding ourselves of any negative traits and connecting to God with purity of heart. Judaism sees the entire month of Elul as a gift of time when we can make amends and change di rection in our lives in a positive way. Some of the traditions of the month of Elul include to sound the Shofar every morning starting of the second day Rosh Chodesh. We also recite Psalm 27 twice a day and increase in deeds of charity and the study of Torah. A midnight Selichot service will be held at Ohr HaTorah on G.f' ngrega t i c HaTorah, ajmn/ffe oj tHhuvirrii ci( VofilSC*rreItini Saturday night August 31, as it is the Saturday night prior to Rosh Hashanah. The Shabbaton at Ohr HaTorah is an opportunity to immerse in the spirit of Elul with joy and to celebrate these awesome days with friends and family. The program begins on August 2, 7 PM with candle lighting and evening services. A delicious Shabbat feast will be served at 7:45 which will include a wine bar, stories, holiday games, and a delightful pre-holiday atmos phere. Cost is $18 per person. $50 per family.
