A long tradition for many loeal Jews dur ing the holidays is the Annual Memorial Serviee held at the Hebrew Cemetery (1801 Statesville Av- Brian and Martha Yesowitch enue, Charlotte, NC 28206). This year the serviee will take plaee on Sunday, September 8 at 10:30 AM. The en tire eommunity is weleome to attend. In addition to our Annual Memorial Serviee, September 8 will also mark our Memorial Building Dedieation. Visitors will be interested to see the building in its final stages of eon- struetion and to view the former Beth El ark in its permanent home. Following the serviee, those who are able may walk with the rabbis around the remaining aeres seven times as part of the eonseeration of these final aeres to a holy purpose. Please note that the Orthodox seetion of the eeme- tery was eonseerated last fall. The land for the Hebrew Cemetery was purchased in 1867 by the dozen or so Jewish families living in Charlotte at the time. These families were thinking not only of their immediate needs as a Jewish commu nity, but of our needs, nearly 150 years in the future. The development is our new, gorgeous Memorial Building. The building will provide a spaee for small fu neral serviees and other gather ings. New seetions of the eemetery grounds were reeently surveyed and will be opening soon. At the serviee, you will have the opportunity to walk new paths and to view the development plans. Many years ago, eemetery members identified the Memorial Building as a eritieal need. As a eommunity eemetery, not affili ated with any one temple, we are 100% dependent upon individual pledges to meet this need. The He brew Cemetery Assoeiation Board of Direetors expresses its deep gratitude to the generous individ uals and families who have al ready pledged to the eemetery’s Building Fund. But, eaeh family’s help is needed to eomplete the Memorial Building’s eonstruetion and the expansion. As Charlotte’s oldest institution, the Hebrew Cemetery weleomes your support. You do Hebrew Cemetery C:1 GrEaloi Cbarjorre not need to be a member to partie- ipate in the eampaign. Pledges are payable over five years. For every $ 1000 you pledge, you may honor a loved one or eouple* and your self be reeognized as the eontrib- utor on the Memorial Wall. If you have not been to the eemetery in several years, our Board Members and other volun teers hope that you will eome to this historie serviee and dediea tion. We expeet that you will be amazed at our eemetery’s wonder ful transformation and will enjoy sharing a sense of eommunity as we pray together. If you or your families have loved ones buried here, you will have time to visit. If you do not have family at the Cemetery, please eonsider joining us as well. You will be fulfilling the mitzvah of saying Kaddish for those indi viduals for whom no family re mains to say the prayer for them. This tradition follows the Jewish teaehing of “Kol Yisrael Arevim Zeh Bazeh” - all of Israel is re sponsible for eaeh other. Every year, I hear eomments like “My favorite serviee of the year is the Memorial Serviee at the eemetery.” “The eemetery is so peaeeful and beautiful.” “It is always uplifting and spiritual.” My wife, Martha, and I feel that way as well. On behalf of the Hebrew Cemetery Assoeiation, I look for ward to your joining us at the Me morial Serviee and Dedieation on September 8. And, we wish you and your families Shana Tova Umetukah - a good and sweet new year.
