The tradition of visiting the graves of the aneestors and pray ing for both the deeeased and the living is very old. It is written in the Book of Numbers about Caleb that “And they went up into the south, and he eame to Hebron.” The Talmud explains that he went there to pray by the graves of the Patriarehs; henee the tradition. The Annual Memorial Serviee is unique, as it is the only time during the year where all three Rabbis and Cantors from the three major temples eonduet a serviee together. Together with the erowd of 250 or more, the Kaddish will be reeited under a huge tent and the names of this year’s departed loved ones will be read aloud. Elyse Bodenheimer, a very tal ented Charlotte teen writer, will be reading her beautiful poem, “Be the Voiee,” and refresh ments will be served. Board President Brian Yesowiteh will intro- duee everyone to the serviee. Building Co- Chairs, Bill Goreliek and Mare Silverman, will talk about the build ing and a Jewish Legaey member will speak about her eommitment to the eemetery. Small funerals and unveilings for up to sixty people will soon be held in side the Mindy Ellen Levine Chapel in front of the majestie former Beth El ark. Before long, families may retreat into the Berlin Family Room and after the serviee guests may eome together in the Goreliek Gathering Room. As Charlotte’s oldest institu tion, the Hebrew Cemetery invites you to attend this years’ serviee on Sunday, September 8, 10:30 AM. Last year we broke ground, this year we are introdueing the near eompletion of the building. Following the serviee, we will offer tours and eonseerate the re- eently surveyed expansion whieh will offer a variety of new plots. Team “Whatever, Whatever” boasted 16 eyelists riding in the memory of Sue Cohen. The riders ineluded: Matt Cohen (team eo-eaptain), Carly Cohen (Matt and Sue’s daughter), Jonathan Wynn (Sue’s brother from Pittsburgh), Aly Lemer, Peter Levinson (team eo- eaptain), Cindy Levinson, Jill Levinson, Jerry Gitlitz, Jerry Goldberg, Mark Rosen, Matt Samarel, Miehael Denenberg, Lori Holeombe, Joy Pfuhl, Ben Roaeh, and Steve Todd. This group of 16 individuals was able to raise more than $25,000 for the fight against ean eer. That put Team Whatever, Whatever in the Top 10 of all teams in fundraising. As far as the eyeling went, Peter Levinson eame in 16th over all and Matt Cohen eame in 26th overall out of 1,200 riders. “We eame together and rode both as a team and as individuals. We rode in the sun, the heat, the rain, and the dark of night to reaeh our individual goals. By a eonser- vative estimate, we rode more than 1,500 miles. The riding is just for personal reasons, as the fundraising is essentially eom- pleted by the time we hit the start line. But we ride for pride, we ride to feel the pain to remind us about the fight, and we ride to remember those we have lost. In our ease, our line is ‘Whatever Whatever’ as we remember Sue and her bat tle to fight breast eaneer,” Cohen said after the event. “...We tragi- eally lost her in Deeember 2011. ... I am honored that this group eomes together in her honor as Remembering Sue Coben at 24-Hours of Booty well as to remember those who are elosest to them.” The team plans to eontinue this effort and partieipate in the event again next summer. Please wateh for announeements in The Charlotte Jewish News. If you have any questions, or you would like to donate now, or you are interested in joining the team, please eontaet Coben at matt.eobenl@ yahoo.eom or 704- 650-2643 or Levinson at roth- wood@aol.eom. ^
